Introduction
Connecticut’s earliest UFO-like stories were not about flying saucers or extraterrestrials. In 1909 and 1910, witnesses spoke instead of “airships”: illuminated machines with searchlights, wings, engines or strings of lamps. That language reflected the great technological excitement of the period, when powered flight was new enough to seem miraculous but real enough to make almost any aerial claim plausible.

The evidence for a secret advanced aircraft over Connecticut is weak. The reports emerged after Massachusetts businessman Wallace Tillinghast claimed to possess a remarkably fast flying machine, a boast now regarded as a hoax. Bright Venus, fire balloons, newspaper repetition and public expectation offer better explanations for much of the wave. Three decades later, however, Connecticut really did produce an extraordinary disc-like aircraft: Vought’s V-173 “Flying Pancake”. Its existence helped later writers blur the boundary between documented aviation history and flying-saucer folklore. Together, the episodes show how people describe an unfamiliar sky through the newest technology available to them.[jstor.org]jstor.orgThree months earlier, Tillinghast said…Read more…
The 1909–10 mystery airship reports
The New England airship excitement began in December 1909, shortly after Tillinghast, a Worcester businessman, told the Boston Herald that he and two mechanics had developed an advanced heavier-than-air machine. He claimed to have completed more than 100 secret flights, including a journey from Worcester to New York and back, and said the aircraft could reach roughly 120 miles per hour. Such performance would have been sensational only six years after the Wright brothers’ first powered flight. Tillinghast never produced the machine for inspection, identified no workshop and supplied no independently verifiable flight record. Historians Stephen Whalen and Robert Bartholomew therefore describe the affair as the Great New England Airship Hoax.[jstor.org]jstor.orgThree months earlier, Tillinghast said…Read more…
The claim nevertheless supplied observers with a ready-made explanation for almost any unusual nocturnal light. Reports spread across Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut as newspapers repeated sightings and asked whether Tillinghast’s craft was passing overhead. The reports were not consistent descriptions of one machine. Some witnesses saw only a brilliant light; others added searchlights, wings, propellers or mechanical noises. Details often became more elaborate once observers knew that an “airship” was supposedly operating nearby.[jstor.org]jstor.orgThree months earlier, Tillinghast said…Read more…
Willimantic produced Connecticut’s best-known accounts. On the evening of 23 December 1909, a luminous object said to carry a powerful searchlight reportedly hovered over the town for about 15 minutes. Contemporary coverage noted that some residents regarded it as an aircraft while others thought it resembled Venus. The title of one cited newspaper report captured the uncertainty: “Mystery Airship Just Like Venus: Machine Hovers over Willimantic.”[JSTOR]jstor.orgThree months earlier, Tillinghast said…Read more…
A more vivid report followed in the early hours of 7 January 1910. John H. Gray, manager of the local opera house, and police officer John Manley described something resembling “a chain of electric lights” joined by what looked like a line of fire. Gray estimated that it appeared about 50 feet long and considered either a comet or an airship stopped for repairs. The account is memorable, but it contains no photograph, recovered material, precise angular measurements or independent technical record. Its quoted size was an impression made in darkness, not a measured dimension.[CT Insider]ctinsider.comExamining some of Connecticut s most spectacular 17046013CT InsiderExamining some of Connecticut's most spectacular UFO…18 Apr 2021 — Many mistook the planet Venus, Other sightings were cause…
That difference matters. Historical newspaper reports establish that people genuinely gathered, watched and argued about unusual lights. They do not establish that a structured craft matching Tillinghast’s claims was present. The surviving evidence is chiefly a chain of press stories, recollections and interpretations produced while the supposed inventor’s name was already in circulation. No securely documented Connecticut encounter yielded physical evidence, an identifiable pilot or a confirmed landing site.
Venus, fire balloons and the Tillinghast hoax
Venus was probably responsible for a significant share of the airship excitement. When bright and low in the evening sky, the planet can appear to hover for long periods. Thin cloud, atmospheric turbulence and the observer’s own movements may make it seem to change colour or drift. Once witnesses expected a flying machine, a stationary point of light could acquire imagined structure: a body around the light, wings extending from it or a beam sweeping beneath it.
The Willimantic episode demonstrates this process particularly clearly because disagreement arose at the time, not only decades later. Some observers called the object an airship; others compared it directly with Venus or Halley’s Comet. In Providence on 24 December, the young H. P. Lovecraft watched a crowd identify a bright object as Tillinghast’s machine while he concluded that they were looking at Venus. That does not prove that every New England report had the same cause, but it shows that a known celestial object was being interpreted through the airship story while the wave was under way.[Wikipedia]WikipediaWallace TillinghastWallace Tillinghast
Other sightings were deliberately manufactured. Fire balloons—light paper balloons lifted by heated air from a candle or burning material—could produce moving orange or reddish lights that rose, drifted and eventually disappeared. According to Connecticut accounts, pranksters took advantage of the publicity by releasing such devices. On New Year’s Day 1910, Winsted prison warden Edwin Hitchcock and companions reportedly launched a balloon and scattered handbills reading “Jan. 1, 1910, on my way to New York”, signed in Tillinghast’s name. The joke worked because the public had already been taught what the light was supposed to be.[CT Insider]ctinsider.comExamining some of Connecticut s most spectacular 17046013CT InsiderExamining some of Connecticut's most spectacular UFO…18 Apr 2021 — Many mistook the planet Venus, Other sightings were cause…
The hoax therefore operated at more than one level. Tillinghast supplied the founding claim; newspapers gave it reach; pranksters created new spectacles; and sincere observers interpreted ordinary lights within the same narrative. One explanation need not cover every report. Venus could account for a seemingly fixed brilliant light, while balloons better fit drifting flames. Meteors, stars, genuine aircraft and exaggeration may have contributed to others. The important point is that no extraordinary machine is needed to explain how a wave of varied sightings developed.
New England was especially receptive because aviation was no longer merely fictional. Connecticut had hosted experimental lighter-than-air work long before 1909. In 1878, Mark Quinlan flew Charles Ritchel’s hand-powered dirigible at Hartford in what was later described as an early American man-carrying dirigible flight. By the First World War, the Connecticut Aircraft Company would build the US Navy’s DN-1 airship. Residents therefore lived amid a genuine transition from ballooning to powered aviation, making rumours of a hidden breakthrough easier to accept.[Connecticut History]connecticuthistory.orgConnecticut History TownsConnecticut History Towns
Why the Flying Flapjack entered saucer folklore
Connecticut’s later “Flying Pancake” story differs from the Tillinghast affair in one crucial respect: the aircraft was real. Aeronautical engineer Charles H. Zimmerman developed a broad, nearly circular lifting body for Vought-Sikorsky at Stratford. The lightweight V-173 test aircraft had a flattened planform, twin tail fins and two enormous propellers mounted near its outer edges. From some viewpoints, particularly head-on or at a distance, it could look far less like a conventional aeroplane than almost anything else flying in the early 1940s.[National Air and Space Museum]airandspace.si.eduNational Air and Space MuseumVought V-173 "Flying Pancake"It could almost hover and it survived several forced landings, including a nose…
The V-173 first flew from Bridgeport Airport in Stratford on 23 November 1942. It completed a substantial test programme—recorded by the Smithsonian as 139 flight hours—and demonstrated remarkable low-speed performance. It could fly at very steep angles, nearly hover in a strong headwind and remain controllable at speeds that would stall many ordinary aircraft. Its odd silhouette and slow movement provide a plausible reason why an uninformed observer might have struggled to identify it.[National Air and Space Museum]airandspace.si.eduNational Air and Space MuseumVought V-173 "Flying Pancake"It could almost hover and it survived several forced landings, including a nose…
Popular accounts frequently state that its Connecticut test flights caused several early UFO reports. That is possible, and the Smithsonian has repeated the belief that members of the public reported the strange aircraft. However, detailed, contemporaneous case records tying named sightings to particular V-173 flights are not commonly presented alongside the claim. It is therefore safer to say that the aircraft was capable of prompting misidentification, rather than treating every later reference to “many UFO sightings” as a firmly documented historical statistic.[Facebook]facebook.comOpen source on facebook.com.
Confusion also arises because two related machines are often merged. The V-173 Flying Pancake was the smaller wooden-and-fabric test aircraft that genuinely flew. The XF5U-1 Flying Flapjack was a heavier, more powerful naval fighter prototype developed from it. The XF5U was completed and underwent ground testing, but the programme suffered gearbox, propeller and vibration difficulties. The US Navy cancelled it in 1947 as jet aircraft made the design less attractive. The full-sized XF5U never completed a true flight.[U.S. Naval Institute]usni.orgU.S. Naval Institute The Pancake that Didn't Fly | Naval History MagazineU.S. Naval Institute The Pancake that Didn't Fly | Naval History Magazine
This distinction weakens one of the more dramatic saucer-era stories: that a secret, high-performance “Flying Flapjack” was roaming American skies around the birth of the modern UFO phenomenon in 1947. A strange disc-like aircraft was indeed built at Stratford, but the machine that flew was the slower V-173, whose tests began in 1942 and ended before the major flying-disc wave. The more powerful XF5U, whose appearance and projected performance most resemble later secret-saucer speculation, stayed on or immediately above the ground.[National Air and Space Museum]airandspace.si.eduNational Air and Space MuseumVought V-173 "Flying Pancake"It could almost hover and it survived several forced landings, including a nose…
How real aviation became UFO mythology
The airship wave and the Flying Pancake entered Connecticut folklore by opposite routes. In 1909, an imaginary aircraft encouraged people to misinterpret real lights. In the 1940s, a real and highly unconventional aircraft later became attached to reports for which direct documentation is often thin. In both cases, the technology supplied a visual and verbal template.
The pattern can be summarised through three recurring mechanisms:
- Expectation shapes description. After Tillinghast’s announcement, witnesses did not merely report lights; they increasingly described the lights as components of an airship.
- Unusual aircraft generate retrospective explanations. Once photographs of the V-173 and XF5U became widely available, their circular shape offered an attractive answer for otherwise unrelated saucer stories.
- Names and variants become compressed. “Flying Pancake”, “Flying Flapjack”, V-173 and XF5U are often treated as one craft, concealing the decisive fact that only the smaller testbed flew.
This does not mean that early witnesses invented everything they saw. A person can accurately report a bright light while being mistaken about its distance, size or nature. Nor does explaining some reports with Venus or balloons prove that every observation had one cause. The more modest conclusion is that the evidence does not support a single secret super-aircraft operating over Connecticut in 1909–10, and that the Flying Flapjack cannot serve as a universal explanation for early American saucer reports.
What these stories add to Connecticut’s UFO history
Connecticut’s airship stories matter because they pre-date the language of “flying saucers” by nearly four decades. They show that aerial mysteries did not begin in 1947 and did not initially require visitors from other worlds. Witnesses reached first for the most advanced machine they could imagine: an airship with electric lights and a powerful engine.
The later Stratford aircraft reinforces that lesson without confirming the mythology built around it. Aviation technology can genuinely produce unfamiliar shapes and flight behaviour, especially near factories, military installations and test airfields. Yet the existence of secret or experimental aircraft does not automatically validate every sighting attributed to them. A convincing identification still requires agreement between the reported time, place, appearance and known operating history.
On the available evidence, Connecticut’s 1909–10 reports are best understood as a socially amplified mixture of astronomical misidentification, fire-balloon pranks, press enthusiasm and expectation created by Tillinghast’s false claim. The V-173 belongs to documented aviation history; the idea that its more advanced XF5U successor secretly flew through the saucer era does not. The lasting connection between the episodes is not a hidden line of extraordinary craft, but a repeated human habit: when the sky offers an ambiguous light or unfamiliar shape, people often build the explanation from the newest technology they already know.
