Introduction

Could Venus explain the unusual light reported near Redmond Municipal Airport before dawn on 24 September 1959? The Air Force thought it could. In its Project Blue Book investigation, officials argued that the main visual target seen by police officer Robert Dickerson and airport personnel was probably the planet Venus, with nearby star Regulus contributing to the appearance. Atmospheric refraction and visual perception effects were then used to explain the reported colours, apparent motion and changing shape.[kgw.com]kgw.comArchive 1959: Fighter jets sent to intercept Redmond UFO12 May 2016 — On September 24, 1959, police officer Robert Dickerson saw a large…Published: September 24, 1959

The Venus theory remains the most important conventional explanation attached to the case. It accounts for several features of the sighting surprisingly well, especially the timing, direction and appearance of a bright object low in the eastern pre-dawn sky. Yet some witness descriptions sit uneasily with the official interpretation, particularly claims that the light appeared to rise rapidly, illuminate terrain and clouds, and behave differently as aircraft approached. Those unresolved details are one reason the Redmond incident remains debated within Oregon UFO history.[kgw.com]kgw.comArchive 1959: Fighter jets sent to intercept Redmond UFO12 May 2016 — On September 24, 1959, police officer Robert Dickerson saw a large…Published: September 24, 1959

Where Venus and Regulus Appeared Before Dawn

The Air Force explanation depended on a simple astronomical fact: Venus was exceptionally bright in the eastern sky before sunrise during the period of the Redmond sighting. Regulus, the brightest star in Leo, was also located nearby in the same general region of sky. Project Blue Book investigators concluded that observers were likely focusing on Venus while occasionally being influenced by the nearby star field.[Wikipedia]WikipediaOpen source on wikipedia.org.

This was not a random suggestion. Regulus and Venus have a well-documented astronomical relationship. In 1959, Venus passed unusually close to Regulus, and astronomers even studied a rare occultation of the star by Venus earlier that year. The pair were therefore recognised celestial objects whose proximity could attract attention from observers looking east before dawn.[Astrophysics Data System]ui.adsabs.harvard.eduAstrophysics Data SystemAn Occultation of Regulus by Venus on July 7, 1959by WH Haas · 1959 — This phenomenon will be of scientific inter…

Several reported features from Redmond fit this scenario:

  • The object was observed before sunrise, when Venus is often at its most striking.
  • Witnesses described a brilliant stationary light rather than a clearly structured craft for much of the observation.
  • Airport personnel viewed the object through binoculars, a situation in which atmospheric distortion can become especially noticeable near the horizon.
  • The reported direction generally matched where Venus would have appeared in the eastern sky.[kgw.com]kgw.comArchive 1959: Fighter jets sent to intercept Redmond UFO12 May 2016 — On September 24, 1959, police officer Robert Dickerson saw a large…Published: September 24, 1959

On these points, the Venus hypothesis is not a superficial dismissal. It addresses some of the strongest objective aspects of the observation: location, brightness and duration.

How Refraction and Autokinesis Can Distort a Bright Low Light

The Air Force did not argue that Venus literally changed shape or colour. Instead, investigators relied on known visual and atmospheric effects.

Atmospheric refraction and colour changes

Objects viewed low on the horizon are seen through a thicker layer of atmosphere than objects overhead. Turbulent air can cause bright celestial bodies to shimmer, change colour and appear elongated. Red, yellow, green and blue flashes are particularly common when a bright object is close to the horizon. The effect is familiar to astronomers observing Venus, Sirius and other bright targets under poor atmospheric conditions.[Internet Archive]archive.orgBrad Sparks Comprehensive Catalog of 1,600 Project Blue Book UFO UnknownsNear Redmond, Oregon. This is relevant because airport witnesses reported coloured extensions and changing hues rather than a sharply defined object. Such descriptions are consistent with strong atmospheric distortion acting on a bright light source.[The Source - Bend, Oregon]bendsource.comThe SourceBend, OregonUFOregon27 Apr 2022 — On Sept. 24, 1959, Redmond police officer Robert Dickerson spotted a flying mushroom-shaped object movi…

Autokinesis and apparent motion

Another factor often cited in aviation and UFO investigations is autokinesis. When a bright light is viewed against a dark background with few visual reference points, observers can perceive motion where none exists. The light may seem to drift, hover, dart sideways or change position even though it remains stationary.

This effect is particularly powerful at night and has repeatedly been documented among pilots, military observers and ground witnesses. A stationary planet can appear to move because the observer’s eyes make tiny involuntary movements while lacking fixed points of comparison.[Internet Archive]archive.orgBrad Sparks Comprehensive Catalog of 1,600 Project Blue Book UFO UnknownsNear Redmond, Oregon. That mechanism could explain reports from Redmond that the light shifted position, hovered uncertainly or seemed to wander slightly while remaining in the same general area of sky.

Shape changes through binoculars

Witnesses at the airport reported an oval or flattened appearance and irregular projections resembling flames. Bright astronomical objects viewed through binoculars in turbulent air often appear distorted, stretched or surrounded by coloured spikes. Small changes in focus can make the object seem to expand, contract or take on unusual forms.

The reported “mushroom” appearance therefore does not automatically require a structured craft. It can arise from optical effects acting on an intense point source.[The Source - Bend, Oregon]bendsource.comThe SourceBend, OregonUFOregon27 Apr 2022 — On Sept. 24, 1959, Redmond police officer Robert Dickerson spotted a flying mushroom-shaped object movi…

Which Witness Details Fit Poorly with the Official Explanation

The Venus theory becomes less convincing when it reaches the most dramatic parts of the testimony.

The first difficulty involves Dickerson’s estimate of distance and altitude. He believed the object had descended to a position perhaps a few hundred feet above the ground and relatively close to his location. Human judgement of distance at night can be badly mistaken, especially when observing a bright isolated light. Nevertheless, the difference between a nearby low-altitude object and a distant planet is enormous. The official explanation effectively requires the witness to have misjudged both distance and height by a very large margin.[kgw.com]kgw.comArchive 1959: Fighter jets sent to intercept Redmond UFO12 May 2016 — On September 24, 1959, police officer Robert Dickerson saw a large…Published: September 24, 1959

A second problem concerns ground illumination. Dickerson later stated that the light illuminated juniper trees and nearby terrain. If remembered accurately, this would be difficult to reconcile with Venus. A planet can appear dazzlingly bright but cannot cast localised illumination strong enough to light nearby vegetation in the manner described. Critics of the Air Force explanation have long highlighted this point.[The Source - Bend, Oregon]bendsource.comThe SourceBend, OregonUFOregon27 Apr 2022 — On Sept. 24, 1959, Redmond police officer Robert Dickerson spotted a flying mushroom-shaped object movi…

The reported ascent is an even greater challenge. Airport records and later witness accounts describe the object appearing to rise rapidly and disappear into or through cloud. Dickerson similarly recalled a sudden upward departure. A stationary planet affected by atmospheric distortion might seem to drift or fluctuate, but it cannot realistically appear to accelerate vertically through cloud cover unless substantial perceptual error is involved.[kgw.com]kgw.comArchive 1959: Fighter jets sent to intercept Redmond UFO12 May 2016 — On September 24, 1959, police officer Robert Dickerson saw a large…Published: September 24, 1959

There is also the issue of timing. According to the accounts, the dramatic departure reportedly occurred as aircraft were approaching the area. Supporters of the Venus explanation argue that changing viewing angles, expectation and attention may have amplified normal visual effects. Critics counter that multiple observers independently reported a sudden behavioural change at roughly the same moment.[kgw.com]kgw.comArchive 1959: Fighter jets sent to intercept Redmond UFO12 May 2016 — On September 24, 1959, police officer Robert Dickerson saw a large…Published: September 24, 1959

Why the Debate Continues

The strength of the Venus explanation lies in its ability to account for the sighting’s basic framework. A brilliant pre-dawn light in the eastern sky, displaying colours, apparent motion and changing shape, is exactly the sort of report that astronomers and UFO investigators have often traced to Venus combined with atmospheric effects. The hypothesis therefore has genuine explanatory power and should not be dismissed as merely a convenient debunking exercise.[Wikipedia]WikipediaOpen source on wikipedia.org.

At the same time, the theory does not comfortably explain every detail preserved in witness statements and airport records. The alleged low altitude, terrain illumination and rapid ascent remain the points most often cited by those who believe the Air Force explanation was incomplete. Because the surviving evidence consists mainly of observations made in darkness rather than photographs or instrument records directly tied to the visual target, neither side can demonstrate its position conclusively.[kgw.com]kgw.comArchive 1959: Fighter jets sent to intercept Redmond UFO12 May 2016 — On September 24, 1959, police officer Robert Dickerson saw a large…Published: September 24, 1959

Within the wider story of the Redmond airport encounter, the Venus theory therefore occupies an unusual middle ground. It plausibly explains much of what witnesses saw, yet it leaves enough disputed details that the case never achieved the status of a clear astronomical misidentification. That tension helps explain why the Redmond incident remains one of Oregon’s most discussed Project Blue Book files.[Internet Archive]archive.orgBrad Sparks Comprehensive Catalog of 1,600 Project Blue Book UFO UnknownsNear Redmond, Oregon.
