The Dighton wave of 1972 was not one spectacular close encounter but a series of night-time reports centred on a small western Kansas town. Police officers, farmers, motorists and teenagers described red-orange or white lights that hovered, brightened, changed direction and sometimes appeared to keep pace with vehicles. The police chase and early reports
Reports around Dighton appear to have begun in January or February 1972 and continued intermittently for several months. Contemporary descriptions usually concerned a round or clustered light, red-orange and white in colour, seen several miles west of town. The police initially considered a conventional explanation. Shelton said officers wondered whether military aircraft were conducting infrared photography, perhaps connected with inspection of feedlot pollution or runoff. Later newspaper accounts reported that Forbes Air Force Base near Topeka and McConnell Air Force Base at Wichita denied operating the kind of low-level, hovering photographic flights being proposed. Shelton’s pursuit became the defining story. He said that when he followed the light by car it travelled parallel to him or remained slightly ahead, even as his speed reached about 100 miles per hour. He also believed the light reacted to police radio transmissions: it would remain stationary until an officer called another patrol car, then begin moving away. That account sounds like an intelligent evasion, but it contains a serious measurement problem. Police were judging an apparently distant light from a moving car on dark, open roads. Without a known range, landmarks close to the object or observations from separated positions, apparent parallel movement does not establish that the light was actually travelling beside the patrol car. A distant light can seem to accompany a moving observer because its bearing changes very little, an effect familiar to anyone who has watched the Moon appear to follow a car. Acceleration by the observer can also make an otherwise steady object seem to retreat.
More detailed UFO-oriented reporting attributed several observations to Dighton police captain John Banninger. He reportedly recorded sightings on 22 and 24 March and again on 5, 7 and 9 July. On most occasions, he said, the light began moving after he used his radio. During the 9 July incident, police in Scott City, about 24 miles west of Dighton, were alerted and an officer there reportedly saw a light approaching from the east. The Scott City report is potentially important because observation from another town could have helped determine direction and distance. The surviving public account, however, does not preserve sufficiently precise times, compass bearings or angles of elevation to demonstrate that both officers were watching the same object. It offers corroboration that another unusual light was seen, but not the triangulation needed to calculate its position or speed.
A roadside encounter raised the stakes
The wave was not confined to police. One of the most memorable civilian accounts came from Pam Krehbiel, then 17 or 18, who was travelling home from a baseball game in Scott City with a friend. She recalled first noticing what looked like a bright star to the north-east. It then seemed to move rapidly and irregularly, changing brightness before approaching their vehicle. Her account differs from the more distant police observations because she perceived the light as coming directly towards the car. She also remembered an unfamiliar smell afterwards. The circle did not turn the Dighton encounter into a strong physical-evidence case. No publicly accessible contemporary laboratory report has established unusual chemistry, radiation or biological damage at the site. Nor does the available reporting demonstrate that the light was directly above the affected patch. Crop damage may have had an agricultural, chemical, fungal or mechanical cause. The resemblance to Delphos made the story more newsworthy, but resemblance is not proof of a common origin.
The witnesses’ fear and persistence are nevertheless relevant. Krehbiel continued to describe the episode decades later without claiming to know that an alien craft was responsible. Shelton likewise framed the police experience primarily as something he could not identify. How the sightings spread across Kansas
By July, Dighton was attracting national wire-service attention. A United Press International report described the recurring light and noted two recent civilian sightings. In August, reporting shifted from a local mystery to a regional “flap”, the term UFO researchers use for a concentrated period of reports. On the nights of 16 and 17 August, police departments and newspapers received numerous calls. Witnesses commonly described red glowing lights that moved slowly or appeared stationary. The geographic spread made the episode look like one coordinated phenomenon, but the reports were not uniform. Some witnesses described a single red light, others several lights, and others blinking red and green colours characteristic of aircraft navigation lighting. Observations occurred at different times and over distances of more than 100 miles. Without synchronised bearings, radar tracks or photographs, it is not possible to show that the same object moved from town to town.
Dighton nevertheless influenced how later reports were understood. Once newspapers and police broadcasts had established red-orange hovering lights as the pattern, subsequent ambiguous lights were more likely to be reported as part of the same mystery. That does not mean witnesses invented their experiences. A reporting wave can contain sincere observations of several unrelated things: aircraft, planets, stars distorted near the horizon, meteors, balloons and occasional events that remain unidentified. Media attention increases both public vigilance and the number of ordinary objects submitted for investigation.
Why police testimony helped but did not settle the case
Police involvement is the strongest feature of the Dighton story. Officers were accustomed to night driving, estimating directions and reporting incidents. Several observations were apparently made during duty hours rather than at a planned UFO watch, reducing the likelihood that every sighting arose from deliberate expectation. Yet occupational credibility is not the same as instrumented evidence. Police officers can describe faithfully what they perceived while still misjudging the distance or motion of an isolated light. The central pursuit account lacks several details needed for reconstruction:
- no verified compass bearings or elevation angles;
- no independently timed positions for the patrol car and light;
- no radar confirmation;
- no clear photograph or film;
- no recovered material;
- no preserved radio recording establishing the sequence of calls and movements.
The reported connection between radio transmissions and the light’s departure is particularly difficult to evaluate. It may indicate a genuine repeated pattern, but it could also reflect selective memory or a normal decision point: an officer watched a light, decided it was unusual enough to transmit, and then noticed a change. Aircraft can also appear stationary while flying towards an observer and then seem to move sideways as their heading changes.
Later retellings strengthened the narrative quality of the pursuit but did not materially strengthen its evidence. The story remained consistent in its broad features—coloured light, hovering, police radio response and an unsuccessful high-speed chase—but no new sensor record emerged. Witness strength and ordinary explanations
No single conventional explanation cleanly accounts for every Dighton report. The observations extended over months, varied in colour and behaviour, and included both stationary lights and apparent approaches towards vehicles. It is more plausible that the wave combined several causes than that every witness saw one recurring object.
Bright stars or planets are credible candidates for some stationary or slowly moving reports. Near the horizon, atmospheric turbulence can make a bright astronomical object flicker, change colour and appear to shift position. A patrol car travelling along turning or uneven roads can exaggerate apparent movement. Such an explanation fits reports of distant red, white or blue-white lights but is less satisfactory for accounts in which a light appeared to approach closely.
Aircraft could explain blinking red, green and white lights, apparent hovering and movement between towns. A plane heading towards an observer may show little sideways motion; once it turns, it can seem to accelerate abruptly. The lack of a match with the specific infrared-survey theory does not exclude ordinary air traffic. Kansas’s open horizons allow aircraft lights to remain visible at great distances.
Atmospheric refraction and mirage effects may have altered the apparent height, colour or motion of distant lights. Temperature layers over the plains can bend light and make objects near the horizon look displaced or unstable. This possibility is difficult to test retrospectively because detailed weather profiles and exact sight lines were not preserved with most reports.
Social reinforcement almost certainly affected the scale of the wave. As Dighton received newspaper attention, residents watched the sky more closely and police departments shared reports across the region. These explanations do not prove that every report was mistaken. They show why the available evidence cannot support the stronger claim that a controlled, unconventional craft repeatedly visited Dighton and deliberately evaded police.
What the Dighton wave means for Kansas UFO history
Dighton’s importance lies in the interaction between witnesses, police communications and regional publicity. A recurring local light became a law-enforcement story, then a statewide pattern. The case also shows the difference between credible testimony and strong physical evidence. Shelton and other officers were credible in the ordinary sense that there is no clear reason to think they fabricated their reports. Civilian witnesses likewise described experiences that frightened or puzzled them. But the evidence necessary to establish extraordinary performance—known range, measured speed, radar tracking or clear imagery—was absent.
Later reporting has therefore preserved rather than resolved the mystery. It has added names, recollections and contemporary newspaper quotations, but it has not produced the records needed to reconstruct the pursuit scientifically. The most balanced judgement is that Dighton experienced a genuine wave of unidentified-light reports, amplified into a regional phenomenon by police radio and press coverage. Some sightings were probably ordinary distant lights seen under difficult conditions; a smaller residue cannot now be identified because the original observations were not measured closely enough.
