Why the reported size remains uncertain

The most striking part of the account is Hall’s estimate of the object’s immense size. However, that estimate depends almost entirely on assumptions about distance.

Human observers looking at lights in the night sky have few reliable visual references. Without known landmarks, stereo measurement, radar tracking or multiple synchronised observation points, it is extremely difficult to judge whether a light is hundreds of metres away or several kilometres distant. A small distant object can appear similar in angular size to a much larger nearby one.
