Did Something Force the Mansfield Helicopter to Climb?
Four Army Reserve crew members reported a close aerial encounter whose apparent effects remain debated more than fifty years later.

Introduction
On the night of 18 October 1973, four US Army Reserve crew members flying north from Columbus reported that a fast-moving light approached their UH-1H helicopter near Mansfield on an apparent collision course. Captain Lawrence Coyne began a steep descent, yet the object seemed to halt above and ahead of the aircraft, illuminating the cockpit with green light. The crew then discovered that the helicopter had climbed roughly 1,800 feet despite Coyne’s stated control settings. The Mansfield encounter matters within Ohio’s UFO history because it combines trained military witnesses, an immediate aviation-safety report and an alleged effect on an aircraft. Those features make it more substantial than a simple distant-light sighting. They do not, however, establish that an exotic craft forced the helicopter upwards. The climb was reconstructed from instrument readings and human recollection, without radar tracking, flight-recorder data, photographs or surviving physical measurements capable of resolving the dispute.
The reported collision hazard
The helicopter, Army serial number 68-15444, left Port Columbus at about 10.30 pm for Cleveland. Coyne was the aircraft commander; First Lieutenant Arrigo Jezzi was the co-pilot; Staff Sergeant Robert Yanacsek was the crew chief; and Staff Sergeant John Healey was the flight medic. Coyne was rated in helicopters, fixed-wing aircraft and seaplanes, while Yanacsek had served as a helicopter crew chief in Vietnam. Shortly after 11 pm, as the helicopter cruised at about 90 knots and 2,500 feet above mean sea level, Yanacsek noticed a steady red light on the eastern horizon. At first it appeared to hold its position relative to the helicopter. Coyne took the controls and began descending. The formal Army account says he increased the descent until the aircraft was passing through about 1,700 feet, while the incoming light appeared to be travelling faster than 600 knots. He called Mansfield tower to ask whether any high-performance aircraft were operating nearby. The witnesses expected an impact. Instead, according to Coyne, Healey and Yanacsek, the light decelerated and appeared to remain above and in front of the helicopter. They described a grey, elongated or cigar-shaped form with a red light at one end, a white light at the other and green illumination beneath it. Jezzi had a less complete view and chiefly recalled a very bright white light. The object then reportedly moved west and accelerated away towards the north-west. Coyne resumed radio communication later in the flight and returned the helicopter to its previous cruising altitude before continuing to Cleveland. Crew testimony and the unexplained climb
The most debated part of the case is not the shape of the light but the helicopter’s change in altitude. Coyne said that he last noticed an altitude of about 1,700 feet while descending at approximately 2,000 feet per minute. When he next checked the instruments, the aircraft was at about 3,500 feet and climbing at 1,000 feet per minute. He maintained that the collective lever — the principal control used to increase or reduce rotor lift — remained fully lowered. That account is striking because lowering collective pitch normally reduces lift rather than creating a sustained climb. Coyne also recalled that the cyclic was held forwards in a nose-down attitude and that engine revolutions had not been increased from the cruising setting. The altitude figures require care. They came from Coyne’s observations of the cockpit instruments during a highly stressful evasive manoeuvre, not from an independent recording. No one could establish precisely when the aircraft began climbing, how smoothly it transitioned from descent to ascent or what every control was doing throughout the interval. The later investigation by Jennie Zeidman is the fullest published study of the case. Beginning in 1976, she and astronomer J. Allen Hynek interviewed the crew separately and together, examined the helicopter layout and sought additional witnesses. Several apparent ground witnesses were located after the initial publicity. One family described bright red and green lights near the helicopter and believed that the two objects were close together. Zeidman used their recollections to support her reconstruction of the encounter. Claims of instrument interference also remain uncertain. The crew said that radio calls to Mansfield went unanswered and that the magnetic compass rotated abnormally. Coyne later reported that Mansfield personnel could not find even the initial transmission on their recording, although communications with other stations worked before and after the incident. Could it have been a meteor?
UFO sceptic Philip J. Klass proposed that the approaching light might have been a bright fireball associated with the annual Orionid meteor activity. A meteor can appear much nearer than it really is, may change colour as it burns and can create an impression of rapid approach when viewed from a moving aircraft at night. The meteor explanation works best for the earliest phase: a bright, fast-moving light seen against a dark sky. It becomes less persuasive if the full later account is accepted literally. The crew described prolonged observation, apparent deceleration, a close stationary relationship, a defined object and a departure on a new course. Zeidman estimated about five minutes of continuous observation, whereas even an unusually long fireball would normally be visible for far less time. There is nevertheless a circularity risk in rejecting the meteor solely because it does not reproduce every remembered detail. Once an unexpected light is interpreted as a collision threat, motion, distance and shape can be seriously misjudged, especially without a fixed background or reliable range information. A meteor might account for the trigger while stress, perspective and later reconstruction account for part of the close-object narrative. That combined explanation is possible, but it remains unproven and does not by itself explain the altitude change.
Was it another aircraft?
Coyne initially assumed that the light was a jet, which was a sensible aviation response. Conventional aircraft can appear stationary when approaching almost directly, then seem to accelerate as the viewing angle changes. Red, green and white navigation or landing lights can also create misleading impressions of shape and orientation at night.
The reported behaviour presents difficulties, however. The Army account says the object appeared to halt above the helicopter and then depart rapidly to the west and north-west. Coyne later said that checks disclosed no known traffic corresponding to the encounter, and Zeidman reported that the final Mansfield Air National Guard F-100 flight had landed at 10.47 pm. Absence from the records is not conclusive. Tower recordings were incomplete or unavailable, and the surviving public case file does not provide a comprehensive radar reconstruction. An aircraft flying outside controlled communication, a distant light seen through an unusual geometry or more than one unrelated light could therefore remain in contention. What is harder to support is the claim that a known jet deliberately matched the helicopter at extremely close range without producing a clear noise, wake or trace in aviation records.
Did the crew themselves produce the climb?
Klass’s alternative for the ascent was that Coyne or Jezzi might unknowingly have applied control inputs while leaning or bracing to watch the object. In an emergency, a pilot can experience narrowed attention, lose track of altitude and make movements that are not later remembered. Former Army helicopter pilot Kevin Randle disputed that scenario. He argued that Army cockpit procedure required an explicit exchange before the co-pilot touched the controls and that an unintended cyclic or collective movement large enough to create the reported climb should have produced noticeable changes in attitude, speed or engine sound. General helicopter aerodynamics do not provide an obvious external-lift mechanism. Yet none can now be tested against recorded control positions, radar altitude or flight data, because the UH-1H carried no modern flight recorder documenting the sequence.
What the case does and does not establish
The Mansfield encounter is stronger than many historical UFO reports in several respects. Four military crew members witnessed the event; their account entered official channels; the central narrative appeared quickly rather than emerging decades later; and their descriptions remained broadly consistent under repeated interviews. The episode also involved a genuine perceived collision hazard, regardless of what the light ultimately was.
Its limitations are equally important. All extraordinary performance estimates depended on visual judgement at night. The object’s distance, size and speed were not measured. The supposed climb was not independently recorded. The ground testimony was gathered later, and no photograph, radar return, recovered material or verified electromagnetic measurement survives. The CUFOS report was detailed, but it was produced by investigators already interested in UFOs and several years after the event, not by an accident board with access to comprehensive instrument data.
Later reporting has preserved rather than resolved the case. The most defensible verdict is therefore unresolved but evidentially limited. Something prompted an experienced pilot to make an emergency descent, and the four men consistently believed that an unusual object came dangerously close. A meteor or conventional aircraft can explain portions of the observation, while stress, perspective and an unrecognised recovery manoeuvre may account for other portions. No single conventional explanation neatly reproduces the entire story, but the surviving evidence is also insufficient to demonstrate that an unknown craft illuminated, interfered with or lifted the helicopter. That tension — a credible report without decisive instrumentation — is precisely why the Mansfield case remains one of Ohio’s most debated aviation encounters.
