The strongest conventional explanation for the object pursued during the Mantell incident is a Project Skyhook balloon. In January 1948, military personnel around Fort Knox reported a large, bright object high above Kentucky. Captain Thomas F. Mantell climbed after it until he likely succumbed to oxygen deprivation. While early investigators briefly considered Venus as an explanation, later reviews found that a giant high-altitude research balloon matched the reported appearance and behaviour far more closely. Why the Reported Movement and Altitude Fit
