How Featureless Horizons Distort Distance

Human beings judge distance partly by comparing an object with nearby landmarks. Over Hawaii’s ocean at night, many of those cues disappear. Atmospheric Effects Near the Ocean Horizon

Not every strange horizon sighting is purely a psychological illusion. The atmosphere above the ocean can bend light and alter the apparent position of distant objects. Under certain temperature conditions, especially when layers of warm and cool air form above the sea, distant objects may appear higher than their true position. Ships can seem suspended above the water, while lights beyond the geometric horizon can become visible and appear detached from the surface.
