Flight 53 was travelling from Nome to Anchorage at about 35,000 feet when the crew noticed an unexpected target on their weather radar. However, unlike a confirmed aircraft track observed simultaneously by multiple systems, the Flight 53 target was primarily an onboard radar observation. That distinction became crucial once investigators began examining what the radar was actually showing.
How range changes and mountain clutter affected the return
The strongest sceptical explanation focuses on the behaviour of the weather radar itself rather than on the existence of a physical object.
According to FAA-related documentation, the target moved toward the edge of the radar display. As it did so, the crew changed the radar scale from a 50-mile range setting to a 100-mile range setting in an attempt to continue tracking it. This detail matters because weather radar is designed primarily to detect precipitation and terrain reflections, not to serve as a precision air-search radar. In practical terms, a radar return that appears to race across a display is not automatically evidence of a high-speed craft. The apparent motion may be influenced by display geometry, range adjustments, intermittent reflections or clutter entering and leaving the radar beam.
Why the FAA could not confirm a solid object
The key finding of the investigation was not that an extraordinary object had been detected. It was that investigators lacked enough evidence to establish what the target was.
FAA records indicate that controllers checked with military authorities and found no known aircraft operating in the area that matched the report. Yet the absence of a known aircraft did not prove the presence of an unknown one.
