That does not mean the case is solved. The challenge is that the physical deposit and the witness reports point in different directions. A thermite reaction can readily explain an intensely hot mass of molten metal on the ground. It does not automatically explain why multiple witnesses reported a bright red aerial light shortly beforehand. The central question is therefore not whether thermite could have produced the molten metal—it almost certainly could—but whether a deliberate thermite event can account for the entire sequence of observations.
Why Thermite and Industrial Scrap Fit the Physical Deposit
Thermite is a mixture of metal powder and metal oxide that burns at extremely high temperatures, often exceeding 2,000°C. From a purely metallurgical perspective, the thermite explanation removes the need for an extraordinary source. A quantity of scrap steel combined with a high-temperature reaction could plausibly create a glowing pool of metal and slag that firefighters later encountered.

How an Aerial Light and Ground Fire Could Have Been Combined
The strongest version of the hoax hypothesis does not claim that witnesses imagined the aerial object. Instead, it proposes that two separate events may have been linked in observers’ minds.
