Public databases contain almost 2,000 reports attributed to the state, ranging from detailed descriptions of structured objects to momentary flashes, distant lights and accounts submitted years after the event. The distinction became especially clear during the East Coast “drone” scare of December 2024. Maryland residents reported large illuminated objects, and former governor Larry Hogan publicised lights above his Davidsonville home. Yet identifiable stars, conventional aircraft and lawful drones accounted for much of the available imagery. What Maryland’s sighting databases really measure
The National UFO Reporting Center, or NUFORC, maintains the most accessible long-running public list of Maryland reports. Its entries commonly include a date, location, duration, reported shape, number of observers and a witness narrative. A typical entry may sound impressive while remaining difficult to test. One 2024 NUFORC report from North Bethesda described a metallic rectangular object, perhaps longer than two school buses, seen for only three or four seconds by one person walking near Twinbrook Metro station. The account gives a direction and approximate elevation, but no photograph, measured distance, radar record or second independent observation. Its size estimate therefore depends on an assumed distance that the witness could not establish. Other entries include several observers, apparent formations or aircraft nearby. Such details can make a report more interesting, but they do not automatically make it conclusive. Witnesses standing together are not fully independent: one person’s interpretation can influence the others, while a group may share the same obstructed view or lack of scale. Reports submitted long after an event also risk memory distortion, especially when the witness has since encountered similar UFO stories or images. This is the central limitation behind impressive-looking totals. A rise in database entries can reflect more objects in the sky, but it can also reflect easier online reporting, population growth, smartphone ownership, news coverage or a highly publicised flap that encourages people to reinterpret familiar lights. Public collections generally lack a control sample showing how often the same observers notice aircraft, satellites or stars when UFOs are not in the news.
NASA’s 2023 independent UAP study identified the broader technical problem: many reports lack calibrated sensors, multiple simultaneous measurements, complete metadata and reliable baseline information about ordinary activity in the same airspace. Why reports cluster around Maryland’s busiest skies
Maps of UFO reports often produce apparent hotspots around cities, airports and major roads. That pattern can seem suggestive until the number of potential witnesses and visible aircraft is considered. More people live outdoors, drive at night, use phones and look towards the sky in the Baltimore–Washington corridor than in sparsely populated areas. They also see more airliners, helicopters and other illuminated traffic.
Research using public UAP data has found that environmental and human geography matter. A national-scale study reported relationships between sighting locations and factors including population, light pollution, tree cover and proximity to airports or military areas. Separate spatial research has likewise treated population density and airport presence as variables that must be accounted for before interpreting a cluster as physically unusual. Maryland is particularly vulnerable to this confusion because several forms of traffic overlap:
- Baltimore/Washington International Airport traffic can appear to hover when an aircraft is approaching nearly head-on. Its forward movement is then difficult to perceive, while landing lights remain bright for several minutes.
- Washington-area restricted airspace produces patrol, police, military and government flights that may be unfamiliar to residents even when they are lawful.
- Helicopters serving hospitals, law enforcement and federal agencies can move slowly, turn sharply and operate at comparatively low altitude.
- Satellites and Starlink groups can appear as formations, strings or repeated lights. Their appearance changes with viewing angle and illumination, sometimes confusing even professional pilots.

Clusters can also form through attention rather than aviation. When a widely shared report tells residents that unusual objects are present, more people inspect the sky, photograph distant lights and post uncertain observations. Reports then validate the original story socially, even when the individual objects have different explanations. The resulting “flap” may contain some real drones, many aircraft and stars, and a residue of cases too poorly documented to resolve.
That does not mean witnesses are dishonest or irrational. Night-time depth perception is weak because the observer often lacks foreground reference points. A single light offers little information about distance, size or speed. An object thought to be 200 metres away may actually be an aircraft kilometres away; once the wrong distance is assumed, an ordinary angular movement can be interpreted as extreme acceleration or a giant craft moving silently.
The December 2024 drone scare in Maryland
The clearest modern example began outside Maryland. During November and December 2024, reports of large or unidentified drones spread from New Jersey across the north-eastern United States. Social media filled with videos of blinking lights, and concerns expanded from aviation safety to claims of foreign surveillance and secret operations. On 13 December, former governor Larry Hogan said that he had watched and filmed what appeared to be dozens of large drones above his Davidsonville residence for about 45 minutes. The location, roughly 25 miles from Washington, gave the claim an immediate national-security dimension. Hogan called the federal response unacceptable and demanded answers. Astronomers and weather specialists examining the video pointed out that prominent lights matched Orion and other fixed stars visible from that direction and time. A stationary constellation can appear unfamiliar when photographed through a phone, especially when digital zoom, hand movement and autofocus make individual points pulse or shift. This identification did not establish that every light Hogan noticed was astronomical. Aircraft or actual drones may also have passed through the field of view. It did, however, weaken the central impression that the recording documented dozens of large craft holding formation over one Maryland property. The case is instructive because the witness was a former governor making a sincere public-safety argument, yet status and confidence could not substitute for positional astronomy or clear imagery.
Other Maryland residents reported blinking, hovering or slow-moving objects during the same period. Local aviation specialists cautioned that many images showed manned aircraft and noted that the Baltimore–Washington region already had aviation notices and complex traffic. Federal agencies reviewed more than 5,000 East Coast reports. Their joint assessment was that the sightings represented a combination of lawful commercial, hobbyist and law-enforcement drones, conventional fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters and stars mistakenly reported as drones. That conclusion should not be overstated. The Department of Defense separately acknowledged that unauthorised drone incursions over military facilities occur and are treated seriously. A mass misidentification episode can coincide with genuine airspace violations. Why drones make weak UFO reports harder to judge
Before inexpensive drones became common, a small object hovering, changing direction or carrying coloured lights might have seemed especially unusual. Those behaviours are now technically ordinary. Multirotor drones can pause in place, turn without banking like an aeroplane and move sideways or backwards. At night, the body may disappear while its lights remain visible, leaving the observer with no reliable sense of scale.
At the same time, many alleged drones are not drones at all. Aircraft navigation lighting commonly includes red, green and white lights. Seen head-on, a plane may look stationary; after turning, it can appear to accelerate suddenly. Atmospheric haze can conceal the fuselage, and smartphone exposure can merge several lights into one glowing shape. A star low in the sky can flash different colours because its light is disturbed by the atmosphere, while small involuntary eye movements can make a fixed point seem to wander against a dark background.
Legal changes have also made genuine night flights more visible. The Federal Aviation Administration permits qualifying drone operations after dark, subject to operating rules and appropriate lighting. Most registered drones must broadcast Remote Identification information, which acts rather like a digital number plate by transmitting identifying and positional data. Nor is the absence of an immediately detected Remote ID signal proof of a covert or exotic craft. The observer may be too far away, may not have suitable receiving equipment, or may actually be watching a manned aircraft or celestial object. Some small recreational drones are exempt under specific conditions, equipment can malfunction, and deliberate violators may ignore the rules. Identification therefore requires a combination of visual evidence, air-traffic information, astronomical checks and, where available, electronic detection.
Drone terminology can itself bias a report. Once news coverage labels unidentified lights as “drones”, witnesses tend to estimate drone-like sizes, hear rotor-like sounds or describe organised search patterns. During an older UFO flap, the same lights might have been called saucers or triangular craft. The change in label often says as much about the current cultural explanation as it does about the object.
What separates a useful report from a database entry
A modern Maryland report becomes substantially more valuable when investigators can compare independent data rather than relying on a single recollection. The most useful cases provide an exact time and observing position, the direction and elevation of the object, unedited original photographs, video metadata, weather conditions and accounts from witnesses who were separated from one another.
A strong investigation should then check:
- Air traffic: whether commercial, military, police or medical aircraft were in the relevant direction.
- Astronomy: the positions of bright stars, planets, satellites, the International Space Station and recent Starlink deployments.
- Weather: cloud layers, visibility, temperature effects, wind and possible balloons.
- Drone activity: lawful operating areas, Remote ID data where obtainable and any restrictions or incident reports.
- Camera behaviour: digital zoom, focus hunting, image stabilisation, lens reflections and compression artefacts.
- Geometry: whether claimed size or speed depends on an unverified distance estimate.
This is why a brief light sighting and a multi-sensor aviation event should not be counted as equivalent simply because both occupy one row in a database. NASA’s study recommended more standardised collection precisely because photographs without location, orientation, timing and sensor information often add less evidence than viewers assume. The standard also protects genuinely unresolved reports. Eliminating a star, airliner or camera artefact is not an attempt to explain everything away; it is how investigators isolate the smaller number of events that may deserve sustained attention. A case that survives ordinary checks with precise, contemporaneous records is more important than hundreds of vague reports that cannot be reconstructed.
How reliable are Maryland’s modern reports?
Taken as individual stories, Maryland’s modern sighting reports range from potentially informative to almost unusable. Taken as a dataset, they reveal where, when and how people describe unusual things, but they do not establish the frequency of extraordinary craft. The December 2024 episode provides the clearest credibility test. It contained legitimate concern about drone access to sensitive airspace, but also high-profile misidentifications of stars and aircraft. For Maryland’s UFO history, the lesson is not that every modern witness is wrong. It is that modern skies contain more identifiable objects than ever, while phones and reporting platforms produce more records of uncertain lights than ever. Their strongest contribution is helping investigators identify patterns and locate well-documented cases; their greatest risk is making a large pile of incomparable, self-reported observations look like proof of one extraordinary phenomenon.
