On 7 October 1987, WYVE news director Danny Gordon contacted Wythe County Sheriff Wayne Pike during his routine news gathering. It appeared near the end of the bulletin instead of leading the programme because he expected an ordinary explanation. Importantly, the descriptions themselves varied considerably. Why thousands of reports were not independent evidence

Large numbers are often cited when discussing Wytheville. Depending on the source, figures range from roughly 1,500 reports during the initial months to more than 3,000 reports received over a longer period.
