Why witness estimates and map clusters mislead

The strongest visual impression many readers get from UFO databases comes from totals and maps. Maryland appears to have hundreds of reports concentrated around Baltimore, Washington’s suburbs and major transport corridors. At first glance, such clusters can look like evidence of hotspots.

In practice, population density is a major confounding factor. More people looking at the sky generally produce more reports. Areas with large populations, busy airports, military traffic, extensive road networks and active internet users tend to generate more database entries regardless of whether anything unusual is present.
