Thousands of public reports cluster around cities, beaches and busy skies, but raw totals reveal more about observation conditions than confirmed anomalies.

Introduction
Modern UFO reports in South Carolina cluster most visibly around Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach, followed by Charleston, Columbia and Greenville. That pattern is real in civilian reporting databases, but it is not evidence that unusual craft favour those places. The leading “hotspots” are also where large numbers of residents, tourists and air passengers spend evenings outdoors beneath busy coastal or urban skies.

The Grand Strand is the clearest example. A recent ranking based on National UFO Reporting Center data from 1995 onwards counted 322 reports assigned to Myrtle Beach and 141 to North Myrtle Beach, compared with 85 for Charleston, 72 for Columbia and 59 for Greenville. These figures identify concentrations of reports, not concentrations of confirmed anomalies. The Grand Strand stands apart
Myrtle Beach dominates South Carolina’s modern reporting map. NUFORC’s records contain repeated accounts of orange, red or white lights seen from beaches, hotels and balconies, often looking east over the Atlantic. One North Myrtle Beach submission from April 2017 described orange “orbs” seen over the ocean by three observers and claimed similar lights had appeared repeatedly at roughly the same evening hour. The setting helps explain why this area generates so many reports. The Myrtle Beach region promotes 60 miles of coastline and receives more than 17 million visitors in a typical year; its tourism authority reported 18.2 million visitors in 2024. Many of those people are outdoors after dark, facing an unobstructed horizon and carrying phones capable of recording or immediately reporting unfamiliar lights. The coastal view also creates difficult observing conditions. A light over the ocean may appear to hover because there are few landmarks against which to judge movement. Aircraft approaching at a shallow angle can seem stationary before turning; distant navigation lights may disappear behind haze or cloud; flares can descend slowly; and satellites may brighten or fade as their angle to the Sun changes. Without a reliable compass bearing, elevation, duration and comparison with flight or satellite records, “over the ocean” is a broad description rather than a precise location.
Charleston, Columbia and the Upstate
Charleston’s position near the top of the list is less surprising when population and aviation are considered. Charleston International shares facilities with Charleston Air Force Base, while the wider Lowcountry includes a major port, military activity and heavily travelled civil air routes. Federal Aviation Administration figures show more than 3.1 million passenger boardings at Charleston in 2024, the highest total for a South Carolina airport. Myrtle Beach recorded about 1.89 million and Greenville–Spartanburg about 1.41 million. Columbia occupies another observation-rich zone. It is the state capital and a large urban centre, with Fort Jackson nearby and McEntire Joint National Guard Base to the south-east. Greenville and the wider Upstate combine a large metropolitan population with Greenville–Spartanburg International Airport and extensive cross-state air traffic. South Carolina also contains Shaw Air Force Base, Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort and other military installations, meaning that unfamiliar military aircraft or training activity are plausible background factors in several regions. These inland clusters differ from Myrtle Beach in one important respect. Coastal reports often describe lights low over a dark horizon; urban and Upstate accounts more often take place amid conventional flight paths, road travel and suburban illumination. Different observing environments can produce similar witness language—“silent”, “hovering”, “suddenly vanished”—even when the underlying causes are unrelated.
What civilian databases can and cannot show
NUFORC is useful because it preserves large numbers of first-hand accounts in a searchable public form. Entries commonly include the date, time, location, duration, number of observers, reported shape and a narrative. That makes the database valuable for identifying repeated descriptions, seasonal surges and places where reporting is unusually common. It is not, however, a controlled scientific survey. People choose whether to report, sometimes years after the event. NUFORC has acknowledged receiving batches containing retrospective cases, correcting information placed in the wrong fields, deleting duplicates and processing backlogs before publication. - Unequal awareness: Residents or visitors who know about NUFORC are more likely to submit than equally puzzled witnesses who do not.
- Delayed reporting: An event remembered from the 1970s may enter the database alongside one reported the following morning.
- Inconsistent place names: A sighting over the Grand Strand might be filed as Myrtle Beach, North Myrtle Beach, Surfside Beach, a nearby community or simply Horry County.
- Multiple witnesses: One event can generate separate submissions, while a group may instead file a single report.
- Changing technology: Smartphones, social media and reporting apps make submission easier than it was in earlier decades.
- Uneven evidence: Some entries contain precise direction and duration; others offer only a short recollection with no image, bearing or corroborating record.
NASA’s independent UAP study reached a closely related conclusion about eyewitness material generally: such reports can be compelling, but they are usually not reproducible and often lack the information needed to determine what produced the observation. The central weakness is therefore not necessarily witness honesty. A national RAND Corporation analysis of more than 101,000 NUFORC reports similarly treated the material as public-reporting data rather than proof of unusual vehicles. RAND found that the likelihood of reports varies with local conditions, including population, access to dark skies, proximity to military operating areas and other factors affecting what people can see. Why beaches and busy skies produce “hotspots”
The most useful way to understand South Carolina’s map is to think in terms of exposure. A location produces more reports when more people are looking upwards, for longer periods, under conditions that make ordinary objects difficult to identify.
Myrtle Beach combines nearly every factor that raises exposure: enormous visitor turnover, high-rise balconies, outdoor nightlife, broad horizons, airport traffic and repeated viewing from the same east-facing coastline. Summer also brings more people outdoors during clear evening weather. The coastline also concentrates attention in one direction. Hundreds of observers may see the same distant aircraft, launch-related phenomenon, meteor or military illumination from different points along the beach. Their accounts may use different town names and estimates of distance, making one event look like a series of separate local mysteries. Conversely, a single witness who repeatedly sees similar lights may submit several reports over time. Both effects can inflate the apparent persistence of a hotspot without deliberate duplication.
Modern satellite constellations have added another recurring source of confusion. NUFORC has specifically asked witnesses seeing a string or bar of lights to compare it with images of Starlink before reporting. Other common candidates include aircraft viewed head-on, drones, balloons, bright planets, meteors and military training. The 2023 Chinese surveillance balloon offered an unusually clear demonstration of how conspicuous known objects can become over the Grand Strand: residents and visitors watched it near Myrtle Beach before an F-22 shot it down offshore. Population, coastlines and misleading comparisons
Raw city totals are easy to understand but difficult to interpret. A ranking that places Myrtle Beach above Columbia does not adjust adequately for tourism, time spent outdoors, municipal boundaries or airport traffic. A per-capita calculation based only on permanent residents can be even more misleading in a resort city receiving many times its resident population in annual visitors.
Geography also affects the count. “Myrtle Beach” may function as a familiar regional label for sightings made well outside the city limits. Greenville, by contrast, is part of a broad Upstate urban area whose reports may be divided among Greenville, Greer, Spartanburg, Simpsonville, Easley and other municipalities. Charleston-area observations can similarly be distributed among Charleston, North Charleston, Mount Pleasant, Summerville and the barrier islands. City-level rankings therefore partly measure naming habits and boundary choices.
A stronger comparison would normalise reports by several measures at once:
- resident and visitor population;
- hours of darkness and seasonal weather;
- airport movements and known military activity;
- the number of separate witnesses to the same event;
- reporting delay and possible duplicate submissions;
- whether photographs, radar, flight tracking or satellite predictions are available.
Civilian databases do not consistently supply all of those variables. As a result, they are much better at showing where people say they saw something than at showing where genuinely unexplained phenomena occur most often.
What the modern pattern really tells us
South Carolina’s modern reporting map has a stable and understandable shape: the Grand Strand leads, while Charleston, Columbia and the Greenville–Spartanburg area form secondary concentrations. This pattern matters because it directs attention towards places where witnesses repeatedly encounter unfamiliar lights. It can help investigators check recurring flight routes, satellite passes, tourism seasons and military activity more efficiently.
What it does not provide is a reliable count of anomalous craft. The strongest interpretation is that South Carolina’s hotspots are largely observation hotspots—places with many viewers, open horizons, busy airspace and an established culture of reporting. Some individual cases may remain unresolved because the necessary records were never collected. That unresolved status should be preserved where appropriate, but it should not be converted into evidence that the state’s beaches or cities attract extraordinary vehicles.
Modern reports would become much more useful if they routinely included exact time to the second, GPS position, direction, angular height, duration, weather, unedited original imagery and immediate checks against aircraft and satellite data. Until then, the apparent clusters reveal far more about where South Carolinians and their visitors watch the sky than about what, if anything, unusual is moving through it.
