The 2004 USS Nimitz “Tic Tac” encounter off the coast of Southern California is often described as the strongest modern military UFO case because it combines multiple kinds of evidence: trained witnesses, radar reports, an infrared targeting video and later confirmation that the footage was authentic Navy material. Yet the case is also frequently overstated. The most dramatic claims about extreme speed and impossible manoeuvres depend on sensor data that have never been publicly released for independent analysis. For California’s military UFO history, the case matters because it occurred during naval operations in airspace monitored by some of the most advanced sensors available to the US military. Modern naval operations involve multiple systems: shipboard radar, airborne radar, electronic support measures, communications logs and mission records. If all of those datasets were available, analysts could compare them and test competing explanations. Instead, the public sees only fragments. What the infrared footage actually shows
The FLIR1 clip is often treated as if it independently demonstrates extreme manoeuvres. It does not.
The video shows a distant object tracked by the aircraft’s Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR) system. The object appears unusual because it lacks obvious features visible in the infrared image. At one point it seems to rotate or change orientation.
