The main wave of Mothman reports began in the Point Pleasant area in November 1966. How writers created the omen connection
The idea that Mothman had predicted the bridge disaster was developed largely after the collapse rather than before it.
The most influential figure was journalist and paranormal writer John Keel. His 1975 book The Mothman Prophecies brought together witness reports, UFO stories, mysterious phone calls, alleged psychic experiences and the bridge collapse into a single narrative suggesting that strange phenomena may precede major disasters. Several factors helped strengthen this interpretation:
- The timing appeared meaningful. The creature reports largely stopped after the bridge collapse, making it easy to view the sightings as leading towards a single dramatic event.

Importantly, Keel’s interpretation was not presented as an engineering explanation for the collapse. Instead, it suggested that unexplained phenomena might accompany or foreshadow disasters. Where folklore conflicts with engineering evidence
The strongest conflict between folklore and documented evidence concerns the cause of the bridge collapse.
The official investigation concluded that the disaster began with the brittle fracture of a single steel eyebar in the suspension chain. A tiny flaw grew over decades through stress corrosion and corrosion fatigue until the component failed.
