This mixture makes the archive valuable but easy to misunderstand. It contains several distinct kinds of evidence:

Exeter survives through a single powerful narrative
The Exeter incident lacks an equivalent, widely accessible institutional collection centred on the principal witnesses. Its public history has therefore depended more heavily on Fuller’s Incident at Exeter, press accounts and retrospective summaries.
That imbalance has consequences. Fuller interviewed witnesses and brought together reports from the wider Exeter-area sighting period, but his book also became the main framework through which later readers understood the case. The proposal is plausible enough to prevent Exeter from being described responsibly as wholly inexplicable, but it has not produced universal agreement. Commercial success, however, should not be mistaken for evidential strength. Festivals naturally reward memorable imagery, confident speakers and simple stories. What museums and archives clarify — and what they cannot
The modern legacy of the Hill and Exeter sightings is strongest when institutions distinguish historical importance from factual confirmation. Archives can preserve original wording, dates, correspondence and changes in testimony. Exhibitions can place the witnesses within their social world. Festivals can show how a community has adopted a strange episode without requiring every participant to share one belief.
They cannot recover missing technical evidence. Neither an archived dress nor a dramatised hypnosis scene can substitute for a verified instrument record. A historical marker cannot decide whether an object was extraterrestrial. A best-selling book cannot remove the problems of memory, perception and retrospective reconstruction.
The surviving record instead supports several firmer conclusions.
The Hill case has an unusually rich paper trail. Its documents make it possible to study how an initially limited sighting report developed into an elaborate abduction narrative. That depth strengthens the case’s historical importance while also exposing evidential weaknesses.
Exeter’s reputation rests heavily on testimony and publication. Multiple witnesses, including police officers, made it more durable than a solitary light report, but the lack of decisive physical or instrumental evidence leaves conventional aviation explanations in play.
Media increased both visibility and certainty. Books and television helped audiences understand the cases, but narrative reconstruction often smoothed over gaps, contradictions and the gradual emergence of key details.
Public commemoration has changed the meaning of both events. The Hill story is now discussed through civil rights, memory and popular culture as well as UFO belief. Exeter has become a civic festival subject whose value includes charity, tourism and local identity.
A legacy of evidence, argument and memory
New Hampshire’s two landmark UFO cases endure because each acquired a different preservation system. The Hill incident became an archive: dense, personal and open to close comparison between early records and later claims. Exeter became a public narrative: consolidated by Fuller’s reporting and renewed through local commemoration.
Neither legacy settles what witnesses saw. Instead, both show how unresolved experiences become history. Documents preserve uncertainty but also reveal how stories change. Television gives disputed memories emotional force. Museums introduce neglected social context. Festivals transform controversy into community tradition.
That is the lasting significance of New Hampshire’s UFO legacy. The state’s reputation does not depend on proof that alien visitors crossed the White Mountains or hovered outside Exeter.
