Fargo’s 1948 aerial chase
On the evening of 1 October 1948, Second Lieutenant George Gorman, a Second World War veteran serving with the North Dakota Air National Guard, remained in the air near Fargo after other pilots had landed. Flying a P-51 Mustang, he noticed a small blinking light that appeared to lack the visible outline of an aircraft. Gorman contacted the control tower at Hector Airport, which knew of a nearby Piper Cub but no other traffic. Gorman then pursued it for roughly 20 minutes. He reported that the light accelerated, climbed steeply and repeatedly appeared to approach his fighter before turning away. This explanation is not perfect. The other witnesses confirmed that a light was present, but they did not share Gorman’s close-range impression of an object actively engaging his fighter. It is also difficult to reconstruct exact angles, distances and timing from human recollections made during a demanding night flight. North Dakota’s terrain adds another complication. Its broad horizons allow bright planets, stars and distant aircraft lights to remain visible for long periods. “Unidentified” is frequently misunderstood. It usually means that investigators lacked enough reliable information to assign a cause, not that they confirmed an exotic craft.
