A flock of low-flying birds is one of the most frequently suggested explanations for the 13 May 1952 Greenville sighting, and it deserves serious consideration. The four amateur astronomers at Furman University reported four reddish oval objects crossing almost overhead in a compact formation before disappearing in about three seconds. Because no reliable estimate of distance exists, the reported speed cannot be separated from the objects’ altitude. A nearby flock could appear to sweep across a large section of the sky very quickly, while an object at high altitude making the same apparent movement would require a far greater true speed. That brief duration is central to the bird hypothesis. Human observers naturally estimate speed from angular motion across the sky rather than from true velocity. The geometry changes rapidly with distance:
- Nearby flock: At a few hundred metres’ range, birds flying at normal cruising speeds can appear to sweep dramatically across the sky in only a few seconds.
- Moderate altitude: At greater distances, the same birds would cover a much smaller angular distance during the same interval and would appear slower.

The reported diamond formation is also compatible with bird flight, although not in a straightforward way. Could the appearance also fit birds?
Speed is only one part of the puzzle. The visual description also has to be considered.
The witnesses described reddish oval objects that seemed to wobble and to fly “sideways”. Those impressions can arise naturally when viewing birds from below at night. Changes in wing position during flapping alter the visible shape from moment to moment, while alternating reflections from the body and wings can create an impression of wobbling or shifting orientation.
However, the lighting conditions complicate the explanation. Blue Book’s analyst noted that the observers had deliberately chosen a dark observing site away from nearby ground lighting. The report argued that bright reflections from birds would normally require a significant source of illumination, and the investigators questioned whether sufficient light was available to make the birds appear so conspicuous. How uncertain estimates affect the conclusion
The strongest argument for the bird theory is not that every reported detail matches perfectly. Rather, it is that the observation contains too little geometric information to exclude an ordinary nearby flock.
Several key quantities remain unknown:
- the actual altitude of the objects;
- their distance from the observers;
- the precise angular path across the sky;
- whether the witnesses saw reflected light or the birds themselves.
Without those measurements, neither apparent size nor apparent speed can be converted into true dimensions or velocity.
Conversely, the evidence does not positively identify birds either. Three of the four observers rejected that interpretation despite being experienced sky-watchers, and the Air Force analyst acknowledged genuine difficulties with the lighting conditions.
