Introduction
The Twin Falls saucer was not an unexplained craft, secret aircraft or mysterious wreckage. It was a homemade prop built by four local boys aged 15 or 16, planted in a residential garden on the night of 10 July 1947 and exposed as a prank the following day. Yet before the confession emerged, Twin Falls police, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Army intelligence had all become involved. Military officers flew from Utah, removed the object and initially avoided explaining what they were doing.[project1947.com]project1947.comPROJECT 1947 -Twin Falls, Idaho - July 12, 1947…

That brief official silence made an ordinary teenage joke look far more consequential than it was. The episode matters within Idaho’s UFO history because it shows how the first flying-saucer craze could turn scrap materials into apparent evidence within hours—and how secrecy intended to protect an investigation could itself encourage suspicion. Unlike many disputed sightings, the Twin Falls case did not remain unresolved: contemporary reporting, the object’s construction and the reported confession all point firmly to a hoax.
Discovery of the homemade disc
The object was found on the morning of 11 July 1947 in the garden of the T. H. Thompson residence in Twin Falls. Mrs Fred Easterbrook, a neighbour, reportedly discovered it at about 8.20 a.m. Accounts gathered later said that people nearby had heard a thud during the night, perhaps around 2.30 a.m., but had assumed the sound came from a passing vehicle. The boys subsequently told police that they had placed the device in the garden at roughly 10 p.m. the previous evening.[project1947.com]project1947.comPROJECT 1947 -Twin Falls, Idaho - July 12, 1947…
The disc was visually theatrical rather than technologically convincing. It measured about 30½ inches—roughly 77 centimetres—across and was compared with two band cymbals fastened together. It had silver- and gold-coloured surfaces, a transparent dome, old radio valves, wiring, an electrical coil and other discarded components. FBI documentation described roughly fitted bolts, damaged wires and parts that looked like ordinary radio or electrical equipment.[documents.theblackvault.com]documents.theblackvault.comdgl1163.tmp…
Two strips of disturbed turf made it appear that the object might have skidded or ploughed into the lawn. That detail gave the scene a superficial resemblance to a crash site, although investigators also noticed an immediate practical problem: the garden was crossed by telephone and power lines, making it difficult to understand how a broad object could have descended there without hitting them.[project1947.com]project1947.comPROJECT 1947 -Twin Falls, Idaho - July 12, 1947…
The construction was effective because it matched what the public had just been taught to expect. Following Kenneth Arnold’s highly publicised 24 June sighting, the expression “flying saucer” had spread through national newspapers and radio broadcasts with extraordinary speed. By early July, circular metal objects, shining surfaces and visible electrical components had become ready-made visual cues for mysterious technology.[National Air and Space Museum]airandspace.si.edu1947 year flying saucerNational Air and Space Museum1947: Year of the Flying Saucer | National Air and Space Museum…
Police, FBI and Army involvement
Twin Falls police took possession of the device and contacted federal authorities. An FBI representative examined it and notified the Bureau’s district office in Butte, Montana. Army intelligence was then alerted, and officers travelled from Fort Douglas near Salt Lake City in an aircraft supplied by the Utah National Guard. Contemporary reporting variously described three officers as the immediate investigating party and a larger arriving group consisting of two lieutenant colonels, two first lieutenants and a civilian.[project1947.com]project1947.comPROJECT 1947 -Twin Falls, Idaho - July 12, 1947…
The federal response was not unreasonable in the circumstances. In July 1947 the United States was entering the Cold War, unidentified aircraft could raise genuine security questions, and military authorities did not yet have an established system for separating sincere reports, misidentifications and deliberate fabrications. The formal Air Force investigation later known as Project Sign was not created until December 1947.[National Archives]archives.govOpen source on archives.gov.
The surviving FBI material also shows that agents were receiving descriptions of supposed discs from around the country. The Twin Falls object was recorded in practical terms: dimensions, materials, visible valves, wiring and the location where police held it. The record does not establish that the Bureau considered it extraterrestrial. It shows an agency passing a purported aircraft-related object to the military while the press was already aware of the discovery.[documents.theblackvault.com]documents.theblackvault.comdgl1163.tmp…
Army officers removed the disc and returned towards Salt Lake City. Only after their departure did Assistant Police Chief L. D. McCracken publicly announce that the incident was a hoax. According to the Associated Press account, an FBI agent entered McCracken’s office in front of reporters and asked whether the news had been released; the agent then indicated that Army intelligence had authorised police to say that four teenage boys had confessed.[project1947.com]project1947.comPROJECT 1947 -Twin Falls, Idaho - July 12, 1947…
How investigators broke the story
The decisive lead did not come from an exotic laboratory test. McCracken said police received a tip that one of the boys knew something about the object. Questioned by officers, the four youths reportedly admitted spending two days building it before planting it in the Thompson garden. They said they had used an old phonograph, burnt-out radio valves and miscellaneous discarded electrical parts.[project1947.com]project1947.comPROJECT 1947 -Twin Falls, Idaho - July 12, 1947…
Their names were withheld because they were juveniles, and police said that no court action would follow. That decision leaves the case without named perpetrators whose later testimony can be checked, but it does not create a serious evidential mystery. Several independent features support the hoax finding:
- The object consisted of recognisable domestic and entertainment-equipment parts rather than an unfamiliar material or functioning propulsion system.
- Its rough construction, exposed wiring and ordinary bolts were consistent with a handmade model.
- The reported confession included a plausible account of how long it took to make and where its components came from.
- The boys’ account that it had been placed in the garden explained the overhead-wire problem and undermined the impression of an aerial impact.
- Authorities released photographs and identified the object publicly as a fabrication within about a day of its discovery.[theblackvault.com]documents.theblackvault.comdgl1163.tmp…
No credible later investigation has produced evidence that the recovered object was anything other than the reported prop. Claims that the confession concealed a genuine recovery require several unsupported assumptions: that ordinary junk components were misdescribed, that police invented the boys, that the Army substituted or displayed a false object, and that no reliable participant later documented the supposed deception. The available record offers no persuasive support for that chain of claims.
Why official attention fuelled suspicion
The most revealing part of the episode was not the construction of the disc but the authorities’ presentation of their investigation. Army personnel declined to identify themselves to reporters, avoided persistent questions and carried the object away before police disclosed the confession. Local journalists complained about a “cloak and dagger” atmosphere and reported that photographs were temporarily controlled or confiscated.[newspapers.com]newspapers.comThe 'Disc' InvestigationTHE "DISC" INVESTIGATION The "flying disc" hoax in Twin Falls at least gave us an insight into that old "cloak an…
To observers who did not yet know about the teenagers, these actions could suggest that the object was important. A military flight from another state, senior officers, FBI participation and restricted information all appeared disproportionate to a piece of homemade metalwork. Once the hoax was announced, some local commentary treated the performance itself as evidence that officials were confused or were staging secrecy for public effect.[Wikipedia]WikipediaUFO reports and disinformationUFO reports and disinformation
There is a simpler interpretation. Officials had been asked to assess a physical object during a national scare, did not know its origin when they arrived and controlled information until police established what had happened. That procedure may have been clumsy and excessively secretive, but temporary uncertainty is not evidence of suppressed extraordinary technology.
The distinction is important. Government interest proves that a report was investigated; it does not prove that officials validated its most dramatic interpretation. In Twin Falls, official involvement began while the object was unidentified and continued only briefly. The final official judgement was not “unknown” but “hoax”.
What the case changed in Idaho’s UFO story
The Twin Falls affair arrived near the height of the summer 1947 flying-disc wave. Idaho residents had already reported objects near Galena Summit, Malta, Richfield and Twin Falls, while the nationally reported sighting by Boise pilot Kenneth Arnold had helped create the vocabulary through which those observations were interpreted. The recovered disc therefore appeared at a moment when both the public and the authorities were unusually receptive to saucer reports.[Wikipedia]WikipediaTwin Falls saucer hoaxTwin Falls saucer hoax
Its exposure supplied a powerful counterexample. Newspaper readers could see that apparent physical evidence—with metallic surfaces, electrical parts, an alleged impact mark and federal investigators at the scene—might still be deliberately manufactured. Contemporary histories of the 1947 wave associate the Twin Falls disclosure with a rapid decline in press coverage, although it would be too strong to claim that this single incident ended the nationwide craze by itself. Reports had already included other jokes, false alarms and mundane objects, and public interest was beginning to recede from its early-July peak.[Wikipedia]Wikipedia1947 flying disc craze1947 flying disc craze
The case also provides a useful contrast with genuinely unresolved reports. A puzzling aerial observation may remain open because investigators lack reliable distance estimates, photographs, radar data or physical material. Twin Falls presented the opposite situation: investigators had the alleged craft in their hands, could inspect its components and obtained a reported admission from its makers. More evidence did not deepen the mystery; it dissolved it.
The most defensible verdict
The Twin Falls saucer should be classified as a well-documented hoax, not merely a weak UFO report. Its core chronology was reported immediately, the recovered device was physically examined, its ordinary components were described in federal and newspaper records, and police attributed it to four local juveniles who confessed. Later retellings sometimes vary over the precise number of Army personnel or compress the timing, but those minor differences do not challenge the central finding.[theblackvault.com]documents.theblackvault.comdgl1163.tmp…
What remains historically significant is the speed with which the prank acquired authority. A disc assembled from discarded phonograph and radio parts became a matter for police, FBI agents and military intelligence because it appeared during a period of intense public expectation. The authorities then amplified the impression of importance by withholding information while they investigated.
For Idaho’s wider UFO history, the lesson is not that every witness or recovered-object claim is fraudulent. It is that publicity, suggestive design and official attention can reinforce one another before the facts are established. The Twin Falls saucer fooled the public briefly, but it also left one of the clearest demonstrations from 1947 of how a dramatic UFO claim can collapse when investigators gain access to the object, reconstruct its origin and test the story against ordinary human behaviour.
