Introduction
Ten Minuteman nuclear missiles assigned to Echo Flight at Malmstrom Air Force Base lost strategic alert status on the morning of 16 March 1967. That shutdown is documented. What is not documented contemporaneously is the dramatic claim now attached to it: that a glowing UFO hovered near the Montana missile sites and disabled the weapons.
The UFO interpretation rests mainly on accounts publicised almost three decades later, particularly by former launch officer Robert Salas. Those accounts describe strange lights, frightened guards and a second missile shutdown at another control centre. Yet the surviving military history places the confirmed Echo Flight failure at 08:45, records no verified unusual activity around the sites and treats the incident as a technical malfunction. The case matters because it joins a genuine Cold War systems failure to later testimony that is vivid but chronologically unstable. What happened at Echo Flight
Echo Flight was one of several groups of ten dispersed Minuteman launch facilities controlled from an underground launch control centre in central Montana. At 08:45 on 16 March 1967, all ten Echo missiles registered “No-Go” indications and lost strategic alert status within a very short interval. Contemporary records estimated that the sequence occurred over roughly 10 to 40 seconds. “Lost strategic alert” did not mean that nuclear warheads detonated, that missiles launched or that they were permanently destroyed. It meant that the launch facilities were no longer reporting as ready for immediate use. That technical uncertainty is important, but it has often been overstated. “Cause not determined” does not mean that investigators found evidence of an exotic craft. It means that the available fault data did not identify a confirmed mechanism. Complex military systems can fail through brief electrical transients, component interactions or signals that leave incomplete diagnostic traces, especially when ten installations are linked to a common command and communications architecture.
How the UFO story became attached
The best-known version comes from Robert Salas, a former Air Force missile officer who began speaking publicly about the incident in the 1990s. Salas said that while serving in an underground launch capsule, he received a call from a guard reporting strange lights moving silently in the sky. A few minutes later, according to his account, the guard called again in an agitated state and described a pulsating red or orange oval hovering above the facility’s front gate. The story is powerful because it appears to connect two events in real time: a close-range sighting above a secured nuclear facility and a near-simultaneous systems failure underground. Salas has consistently argued that the timing makes coincidence unlikely, although he did not personally see the reported object from the buried capsule. Former targeting officer Robert Jamison later added that he had been called to assist with restarting missiles during the same general period and had heard rumours of UFO activity. Why the chronology is a major problem
The central weakness is that Salas’s later account does not fit neatly onto the documented Echo Flight event. The confirmed Echo shutdown occurred in the morning on 16 March. Salas has more recently placed his own experience during an evening shift on 24 March at Oscar Flight, near Roy, Montana, with Fred Meiwald as his commander. Salas has explained that when he first learnt about the declassified Echo records, he assumed they described the event he remembered. Later research led him to identify Oscar Flight instead. This revision does not prove that his memory is false, but it removes the most straightforward link between his reported red object and the documented ten-missile Echo shutdown. A witness can accurately remember an alarming call while misremembering its date or later associating it with the wrong technical incident. After nearly 30 years, that risk is substantial.
There is also no comparable surviving official record showing that all ten Oscar Flight missiles went offline during Salas’s reported encounter. Fred Meiwald reportedly confirmed that guards had mentioned an unusual light, but disputed or did not recall the full missile-loss sequence described by Salas. Accounts connected with Echo Flight itself are also conflicted. Deputy crew commander Walter Figel recalled receiving a radio remark about a “UFO” near a launch facility, but he has described the comment as something he treated as joking or unconfirmed rather than as a formal sighting report. Echo commander Eric Carlson denied that a UFO was involved and regarded the shutdown as an equipment failure. This is more than a minor disagreement over detail. The UFO case depends upon a tight sequence: object observed, missiles disabled, object departs. Once the reported sighting and the documented failure are separated by location, date or uncertain recollection, the apparent cause-and-effect relationship becomes much weaker.
What the contemporary records say
The surviving command history is the strongest evidence because it was compiled close to the event and contains the engineering investigation. It records the ten-missile shutdown, diagnostic findings and concern within Strategic Air Command. That wording does not demonstrate that every guard was interviewed or that every relevant note survives. Military records can omit informal conversations, and the absence of a formal UFO report is not proof that no one saw an unusual light. Nevertheless, the history creates a serious evidential obstacle: the document that confirms the failure also records a contemporary check for unusual activity and reports a negative result.
Nor does the technical report describe physical damage consistent with a nearby attack. The missiles were returned to strategic alert, and diagnostic work focused on electrical and logic-system behaviour. Investigators considered an adverse power effect and attempted to reproduce the conditions, but the available tests reportedly produced negative results. The official record therefore supports two conclusions at once. First, this was not a trivial single-silo fault: the near-simultaneous loss of ten missiles was real and serious. Secondly, the record does not corroborate the later claim that a UFO was present or causally responsible.
Could an electrical effect explain it?
A common electrical disturbance has long been one of the leading technical alternatives. The sites were dispersed, but their reporting and control systems shared communications pathways and related equipment. An abnormal signal, voltage transient or failure in a common subsystem could potentially place multiple missiles into a controlled shutdown without producing obvious damage at every facility.
Investigators examined whether commercial power or another adverse power condition could have generated the event. Their tests did not conclusively reproduce the shutdown, which is why the original cause remained undetermined. In 2025, The Wall Street Journal reported that Pentagon investigators had traced the Malmstrom story to a classified electromagnetic-pulse test capable of interfering with missile systems. This would offer a conventional explanation for both the unusual electrical effects and the later secrecy surrounding them. However, the detailed investigation and technical documentation supporting that claim have not been publicly released. The reported electromagnetic explanation also needs to be matched precisely to the historical evidence. It would have to account for the date, test location, affected equipment, safety authorisations and diagnostic signatures recorded in 1967. What remains unexplained
Several elements remain legitimately uncertain. The exact technical trigger for the Echo Flight shutdown was not established in the declassified engineering material. Some former personnel remembered UFO rumours or reports of unusual lights around Malmstrom’s missile fields. The surviving archive may also be incomplete, particularly for informal security communications and any classified testing.
Yet the gaps are narrower than popular retellings imply. There is no contemporaneous document confirming a structured object above Echo Flight when its missiles failed. No photograph, radar record, instrument reading or physical trace ties an aerial phenomenon to the shutdown. The most detailed red-object narrative emerged decades later and migrated between Echo and Oscar Flight as Salas attempted to reconstruct its date and location. The missile failure is well evidenced; the proposed UFO mechanism is not.
Ordinary celestial objects may also explain at least some reported lights. Mars was conspicuous in the relevant period and has been proposed as the source of orange or reddish lights seen at a distance. That explanation cannot account for every claimed manoeuvre in Salas’s later description, but such motion reports were relayed verbally rather than preserved through radar or calibrated observation. The evidence does not justify that conclusion. Ten Echo Flight missiles unquestionably lost alert status on 16 March 1967, and the common cause was serious enough to prompt an engineering investigation. That remains one of the most striking documented technical incidents in Montana’s UFO history.
The claim of UFO involvement, however, depends on later witness narratives that conflict over date, flight and sequence. Contemporary military records acknowledge UFO rumours but say they were checked and not substantiated. The fairest assessment is that Malmstrom combines a confirmed missile shutdown, possible but poorly documented reports of unusual lights, and an unproved causal connection between the two. Later reporting has expanded the story and produced additional testimony, but it has not supplied the missing contemporaneous evidence.
