Could Arkansas UFO speeds ever be measured? In principle, yes. In practice, most historical Arkansas sightings do not contain the information needed to do it reliably. The basic problem is straightforward. Speed and size calculations depend on range.
If an observer sees a light cross half the sky in ten seconds, the apparent motion can be measured. What cannot be known from a single viewpoint is whether the object was:
- a small object nearby,
- a conventional aircraft at medium range,
- or something much farther away.
Each possibility produces a completely different estimate of size and speed.

- An object appears to be one degree wide in the sky.
- If it is 500 metres away, it is roughly 9 metres across.
- If it is 5 kilometres away, it is roughly 87 metres across.

The apparent angular size is identical in all three cases. Only the distance changes.
How Triangulation Turns Angles into Measurements
The traditional solution is triangulation.
Triangulation requires at least two observers positioned at known locations who record the object’s position against the sky at exactly the same time. By comparing viewing angles from different points, investigators can calculate the object’s distance and altitude. The process works much like human depth perception. Your eyes see an object from slightly different angles, allowing your brain to estimate distance. Scientific triangulation uses the same principle but with observers or cameras separated by a much larger baseline.

- Precise observer locations.
- Accurate timestamps.
- Recorded angles to the object.
- Independent observations from at least two sites.

- exact observer coordinates,
- precise observation times,
- calibrated photographs,
- angular measurements,
- radar range data,
- and synchronized observations from multiple locations.
Without these details, investigators cannot reconstruct a reliable three-dimensional flight path.
As a result, dramatic statements about an object being miles wide, hovering at impossible heights or travelling at extraordinary speeds often cannot be verified or falsified. The evidence simply does not contain enough measurement data.
What Radar and Multiple Sensors Can Add
Triangulation is only one route to verification.
Radar can provide direct information about range and movement. If radar records are matched with visual observations, investigators gain a far stronger basis for estimating altitude and speed than eyewitness testimony alone.
