Why Montana Became a UFO Landmark

Montana’s UFO history is unusually influential for a sparsely populated state. Its reputation rests chiefly on two cases centred on Great Falls: Nick Mariana’s 1950 colour film of two bright objects, and the 1967 shutdown of ten nuclear missiles in Malmstrom Air Force Base’s Echo Flight.

Introduction

Neither case proves that an extraordinary craft visited Montana. The Mariana film is genuine footage of something in the sky, but its small, featureless images do not establish what was filmed. The missile shutdown certainly happened, but the claim that a UFO caused it emerged publicly much later and conflicts with contemporary military documentation. Montana therefore offers a useful lesson in UFO investigation: an incident can be historically important and genuinely unresolved in some respects without providing evidence of extraterrestrial technology.

Why Montana became a UFO landmark

Montana combines exceptionally open skies with a strong military presence. Great Falls sits close to Malmstrom Air Force Base, which has operated strategic aircraft and, since the Cold War, a vast network of intercontinental ballistic missile sites across central Montana. That mixture of civilian observers, military flights, restricted activity and nuclear infrastructure has made the region especially fertile ground for unusual reports.

The geography also affects perception. Distant aircraft, planets, balloons and satellites can remain visible for long periods over the plains, yet without nearby reference points their altitude, size and speed are extremely difficult to judge. A light that appears to hover may be moving towards the observer; two objects that seem close together may be separated by miles. Modern investigators repeatedly identify balloons, aircraft, satellites, birds and other ordinary objects as causes of UAP reports, while acknowledging that poor or incomplete data can leave otherwise conventional events unresolved.[AAROM]aaro.milMAARO HomeCommon objects/causes frequently reported as UAP include: Airborne clutter: Includes windborne debris like plastic bags and…

Montana’s fame, however, is not simply the product of frequent reports. It comes from a small number of cases that entered national UFO history and were preserved in government files, films, affidavits and local reporting.

The Mariana film: Montana’s strongest visual case

On 15 August 1950, Nick Mariana, general manager of the Great Falls Electrics minor-league baseball team, was at Legion Stadium with his secretary, Virginia Raunig. Mariana said that a flash drew his attention to two bright objects moving across the sky. He retrieved a 16 mm colour camera from his car and recorded roughly 16 seconds of footage. Raunig also reported seeing the objects.[Wikipedia]WikipediaMariana UFO filmMariana UFO film

The result, usually called the Mariana film or the Montana film, became one of the earliest widely publicised motion pictures associated with a flying-saucer report. Its importance lies less in what it clearly shows than in when it was made. It predates digital manipulation, consumer drones and most later UFO imagery, while providing an original physical record that could be repeatedly examined.

The surviving film shows two bright points crossing a blue sky. They retain a broadly steady appearance but reveal little usable structure. There is no landscape in most of the relevant frames, no independent measurement of distance and no reliable way to convert their apparent motion into a true speed. Those limitations have allowed very different interpretations to survive.

What official investigators concluded

The initial Air Force explanation was that the lights were reflections from two F-94 jet fighters operating in the area. That conclusion was later questioned during a more detailed review under Project Blue Book. Edward Ruppelt, who headed Blue Book in its early years, wrote that the jets did not appear to have been in the correct position and that analysts could not identify the objects as birds, balloons, meteors or aircraft reflections. The case consequently acquired an “unidentified” reputation.[Wikipedia]WikipediaMariana UFO filmMariana UFO film

The film was reconsidered during the University of Colorado UFO study of the late 1960s, commonly known as the Condon investigation. Its case analysis found the evidence insufficient for a firm identification. Investigators discussed aircraft reflections as a plausible possibility but could not reconstruct the observation precisely enough to demonstrate an answer.[NCAS Files]files.ncas.orgNCAS FilesCase 47: Great Falls Movie FilmWitness I submitted the film to Air Force ATIC officials who at that time were investigating UFO…

This history is sometimes simplified into the claim that the Air Force proved the film showed UFOs. It did not. “Unidentified” meant that investigators could not confidently match the images to a known cause using the available information. Project Blue Book as a whole recorded 12,618 reports between 1947 and 1969, of which 701 remained unidentified, while concluding that it had found no evidence that unidentified cases represented extraterrestrial vehicles or technology beyond contemporary scientific knowledge.[National Archives]archives.govOf these 701 remain "Unidentified." The missing-frames dispute

Mariana later alleged that the clearest opening frames had disappeared while the film was in Air Force custody. He and several people who said they had seen the original version described those frames as showing more distinct, disc-like forms. Air Force personnel denied removing a meaningful section and said only a damaged frame had been taken out. The discrepancy has never been conclusively resolved.[Wikipedia]WikipediaMariana UFO filmMariana UFO film

The allegation matters because it affects confidence in the chain of custody. Yet it cannot restore evidence that is no longer available. Recollections of missing imagery, however sincere, cannot be tested like the surviving film. The most defensible assessment is therefore narrow: Mariana filmed two bright objects, the surviving footage is authentic but low in detail, and no proposed explanation has been proved beyond reasonable doubt.

The incident remains woven into Great Falls culture. The city’s baseball team was renamed the Great Falls Voyagers in 2008, explicitly drawing on the local flying-saucer story.[The History Museum]greatfallshistorymuseum.orgTo honor thatThe History MuseumMariana UFO Incident: Great Falls' Visiting Voyagers1 Sept 2025 — Great Falls has had over 100 reported UFO sightings…

Malmstrom: did a UFO disable nuclear missiles?

Montana’s most consequential UFO claim concerns an actual weapons failure. At 8.45 am on 16 March 1967, all ten Minuteman missiles assigned to Echo Flight, part of the 341st Strategic Missile Wing at Malmstrom, lost strategic-alert status nearly simultaneously. Maintenance teams restored the sites, and the Air Force investigated the failure. Contemporary records confirm the shutdown; the dispute concerns its cause and whether an unusual object was present.[documents.theblackvault.com]documents.theblackvault.compdf14 Jun 2001 — The following is the investigation of Echo Flight incident and too results. (u). On 16!-2rch 1967 at 084S, all sites in…

The popular version says a glowing UFO hovered near a launch facility while the missiles went offline. The leading public witness, former missile officer Robert Salas, began discussing his account many years later. He said guards telephoned an underground launch-control centre to report strange lights and then a red or orange object near the gate, shortly before the missiles registered faults. Other retired servicemen subsequently supplied statements describing UFO-related events around Malmstrom’s missile fields.[documentcloud.org]documentcloud.orgOpen source on documentcloud.org.

These accounts are significant because they came from trained military personnel serving in a highly controlled environment. They also concern nuclear command systems, where any simultaneous failure deserves serious attention. Credible witnesses, however, can accurately describe their experiences while being mistaken about the connection between two events.

What the contemporary record says

The surviving command history records the Echo Flight shutdown but states that rumours of UFO activity were disproved. It says a mobile security team operating in the area reported no unusual sightings. That document does not establish the precise technical cause of every failure, but it directly contradicts the later claim that a UFO was documented alongside the shutdown at Echo Flight.[Wikipedia]WikipediaMalmstrom UFO incidentMalmstrom UFO incident

Chronology is another difficulty. Salas has associated his experience with a separate flight of missiles, commonly identified as Oscar Flight, and dates and locations have varied as researchers attempted to reconcile later memories with the Echo documentation. The underlying missile outage is well recorded; the proposed sequence linking an object, guards’ observations and specific launch facilities is much less secure.

This does not automatically discredit the witnesses. Nuclear operations were compartmentalised, and officers might not have been told about tests, faults or activities outside their immediate duties. It does mean the case should not be presented as ten missiles demonstrably switched off by a hovering craft. That causal claim is not established by the available contemporary evidence.

A reported classified-test explanation

In June 2025, The Wall Street Journal reported that investigators from the Pentagon’s All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office had traced the Malmstrom story to a classified Cold War test of an electromagnetic-pulse simulator. According to the report, a device elevated near a facility could charge until it emitted an intense orange glow and then produce disruptive electromagnetic energy intended to test missile-system vulnerability. Former personnel, unaware of the classified programme, could therefore have interpreted the light and simultaneous equipment failures as an unknown craft.[The Wall Street Journal]wsj.comOpen source on wsj.com.

This is potentially the most important reinterpretation of the Malmstrom case, but caution remains necessary. The detailed supporting records were not included in AARO’s publicly released 2024 historical report, and the reported finding has not yet been presented in a full public case file containing test schedules, equipment locations and a direct match to the affected missiles. AARO’s 2024 report more broadly argued that secrecy surrounding American reconnaissance and weapons programmes contributed to UFO reports, including sightings of high-altitude U-2 aircraft.[U.S. Department of War]war.govdepartment of war releases unidentified anomalous phenomena files in historic tdepartment of war releases unidentified anomalous phenomena files in historic t(https://media.defense.gov/2024/Mar/08/2003409233/-1/-1/0/DOPSR-2024-0263-AARO-HISTORICAL-RECORD-REPORT-VOLUME-1-2024.PDF)

The classified-test explanation is more grounded than an extraterrestrial hypothesis because it provides a known mechanism for both the visible glow and the technical disruption. At present, however, it should be described as a reported investigative conclusion rather than a completely documented public resolution.

Sightings, flaps and the Great Falls effect

Great Falls accumulated a reputation as Montana’s leading UFO hotspot after 1950. Local histories cite more than 100 reported sightings associated with the area, although such totals depend on which private databases, dates and geographical boundaries are counted. They should not be treated as a measure of unexplained activity: reporting databases contain observations of very unequal quality and commonly include events later attributable to aircraft, stars, planets, satellites or balloons.[The History Museum]greatfallshistorymuseum.orgTo honor thatThe History MuseumMariana UFO Incident: Great Falls' Visiting Voyagers1 Sept 2025 — Great Falls has had over 100 reported UFO sightings…

Rather than one clearly defined “Montana flap”, the state’s UFO history is better understood as several overlapping waves:

  • The early flying-saucer era: Mariana’s 1950 film appeared when American newspapers were already giving intense attention to reports of disc-shaped objects. Its visual form and rapid national circulation made Great Falls part of that first major cultural wave.
  • The Cold War and missile era: From the 1960s onwards, reports around Malmstrom became linked to nuclear weapons, security patrols and unexplained technical incidents. Later testimony gave these stories greater prominence than they had in contemporary public reporting.
  • The civilian database era: Telephone hotlines and online reporting systems made it easier to record isolated lights, formations and triangular objects from rural Montana. The resulting volume is useful for locating patterns, but most entries lack radar data, calibrated imagery or independent investigation.
  • The modern UAP era: Renewed federal interest has encouraged military and civilian reporting, but it has also highlighted how frequently ambiguous objects prove ordinary once better data become available.

The February 2023 Chinese surveillance balloon illustrates that last point particularly well. People in Montana saw a large unfamiliar object, Billings airport traffic was temporarily halted, and military aircraft were prepared for possible action. The object was initially a UFO in the literal sense for many observers, but tracking and intelligence information quickly identified it as a high-altitude balloon rather than an inexplicable craft.[AP News]apnews.comOpen source on apnews.com.

The episode does not explain historical cases retrospectively. It demonstrates why “unidentified” is a provisional status, not a description of an object’s origin.

What counts as strong evidence?

Montana’s best-known cases show why apparently impressive evidence can remain inconclusive.

The Mariana incident has film and two witnesses, but lacks distance, scale, sharp detail and a secure reconstruction of aircraft movements. The Malmstrom incident has military records and later witness testimony, but the records confirm the technical failure more clearly than the alleged UFO encounter. In each case, the strongest evidence establishes that something happened; it does not establish the extraordinary interpretation attached to it.

A strong modern Montana case would ideally include:

  • simultaneous observations from separated locations;
  • original photographs or video with exact time and location metadata;
  • radar, air-traffic or military tracking information;
  • astronomical, satellite and weather checks;
  • reliable aircraft and balloon records;
  • a documented chain of custody for all imagery;
  • witness statements taken promptly and independently.

NASA’s independent UAP study concluded that most reports contain too little consistent, calibrated information for firm scientific conclusions. AARO similarly argues that many unresolved reports would probably be identified if better-quality data were available. That distinction is essential: insufficient evidence for an ordinary explanation is not positive evidence for an extraordinary one.[NASA Science]science.nasa.govScience Independent Study Team ReportScience Independent Study Team Report

What remains unresolved?

The Mariana film remains unresolved in the limited sense that no explanation has been demonstrated conclusively from the surviving footage. Aircraft reflections remain plausible, but the geometry cannot now be reconstructed with confidence. Claims that the film clearly depicts structured alien craft go beyond what its images can support.

The Malmstrom missile shutdown is less mysterious as an event: ten missiles unquestionably went offline. What remains disputed is whether a reported object was present, which missile flight the later testimony concerns, and whether any sighting was causally connected to the failures. The reported electromagnetic-test finding could substantially weaken the UFO interpretation, but a detailed public evidential record is still needed to close the case transparently.

Montana’s broader sighting history contains many sincere reports but comparatively little instrument-quality evidence. Its importance comes from the intersection of memorable witnesses, early film, nuclear installations and government secrecy—not from a verified concentration of non-human craft.

The clearest verdict on Montana

Montana deserves its prominent place in American UFO history because its two landmark cases raise genuine investigative questions. Mariana’s film is historically important and not conclusively identified. The Malmstrom shutdown is a documented military incident around which a much more contested UFO narrative later developed.

The balance of evidence does not support treating either as confirmed extraterrestrial activity. The Mariana case is best labelled unresolved but evidentially limited. The Malmstrom case is a real technical failure with a disputed UFO connection and an increasingly plausible classified-test explanation. Other Montana reports range from weakly documented lights to identifiable aircraft, balloons, satellites and astronomical objects.

The state’s lasting lesson is not that every mystery has been solved, nor that unexplained means alien. It is that witness credibility, official secrecy and physical records can coexist with uncertainty—and that the decisive factor is usually not how strange an account sounds, but whether enough reliable data survived to test it.
