The investigation also tested claims that the lights moved in unusual ways. Mansfield repeatedly measured certain lights that witnesses described as drifting or changing position. A substantial number of lights lined up with roads carrying motor traffic. Automobile headlights, viewed from many miles away and partially obscured by ridges, could appear as isolated floating lights. In at least one documented observation, the appearance of a light coincided precisely with the expected arrival of a scheduled train at a curve in the line. The geography of the region creates long sightlines across valleys and ridges. At night, observers have few visual references for judging distance.
