Did Seattle's First Saucer Photo Show a Balloon?

Seattle's famous 1947 photograph looked persuasive in print, yet its tiny image and uncertain range left a weather balloon as the strongest explanation.

Introduction

Frank Ryman’s photograph, taken from the Lake City area north of Seattle on 4 July 1947, occupies an unusual place in Washington’s UFO history. It was the first published photograph in the state to appear to show one of the newly famous “flying saucers” that had captured public attention after Kenneth Arnold’s Mount Rainier sighting. At first glance, the image seemed to provide rare visual evidence during the state’s 1947 flying-saucer flap. On closer examination, however, the photograph reveals very little about the object itself. Because it shows only a tiny bright disc against the sky, with no reliable information about distance, size or motion, later investigators concluded that a weather balloon is the most convincing explanation. Rather than strengthening the case for an unexplained craft, the Ryman photograph illustrates how a striking image can become historically important while remaining weak as physical evidence.[historylink.org]historylink.orgJuly 4, 1947. - HistoryLink.orgFebruary 8, 1999…Published: July 4, 1947

How Frank Ryman took the photograph

On the afternoon of 4 July 1947, Frank Ryman, an off-duty United States Coast Guard yeoman living in Seattle’s Lake City neighbourhood, noticed an unusual object overhead and photographed it from his garden. The timing was significant. Kenneth Arnold’s report of fast-moving objects over the Cascade Range had made international headlines only ten days earlier, and newspapers across the United States were publishing fresh flying-saucer stories almost daily.[historylink.org]historylink.orgJuly 4, 1947. - HistoryLink.orgFebruary 8, 1999…Published: July 4, 1947

The photograph appeared on the front page of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer the following morning. For readers already immersed in reports of mysterious discs, it seemed to offer something earlier accounts lacked: a picture instead of a verbal description. In a media environment where almost every new report relied solely on eyewitness testimony, even a blurry photograph carried considerable persuasive power.[historylink.org]historylink.orgJuly 4, 1947. - HistoryLink.orgFebruary 8, 1999…Published: July 4, 1947

The image quickly became part of Washington’s growing flying-saucer story, but its influence owed more to its publication than to what it actually revealed.

What the image can and cannot reveal

The photograph shows only a small bright object against a darker background. That simplicity is also its greatest limitation.

Unlike a modern photograph with digital metadata or multiple frames, Ryman’s single image provides no dependable way to determine:

  • the object’s distance from the camera;
  • its true size;
  • its altitude;
  • its speed;
  • whether it was moving at all when the shutter was released.

Without those measurements, almost any estimate of the object’s dimensions depends entirely on assumptions. A small nearby balloon and a much larger distant object could produce very similar images on film.

The lack of reference points also matters. The photograph contains no buildings, horizon or landscape features that would allow investigators to reconstruct the viewing geometry. As a result, it cannot independently confirm extraordinary claims about speed or altitude. The picture documents that Ryman photographed something in the sky, but it does not identify what that something was.[historylink.org]historylink.orgJuly 4, 1947. - HistoryLink.orgFebruary 8, 1999…Published: July 4, 1947

This limitation distinguishes the photograph from stronger forms of evidence. A photograph can preserve an instant in time, but unless it also captures enough contextual information, it may contribute surprisingly little to identifying the object.

Why the balloon explanation remains persuasive

Later researchers generally concluded that the photographed object was most likely a weather balloon. This explanation does not depend on proving exactly which balloon it was. Instead, it reflects how well an ordinary balloon fits both the appearance of the image and the absence of contradictory evidence.[historylink.org]historylink.orgJuly 4, 1947. - HistoryLink.orgFebruary 8, 1999…Published: July 4, 1947

Several factors support that assessment.

First, the object appears as a small, bright, rounded form lacking visible structural detail. This is consistent with how a sunlit balloon can appear on mid-twentieth-century photographic film.

Second, no independently verified evidence accompanied the photograph. There were no instrument readings, no radar observations, no recovered material and no sequence of photographs showing unusual manoeuvres.

Third, weather balloons were familiar features of the post-war atmosphere. During the summer of 1947, balloons were repeatedly mistaken for flying discs across the United States as public attention became focused on anything unusual in the sky. Contemporary newspapers carried numerous balloon-related explanations for reported saucers, demonstrating that such misidentifications were common during the nationwide flying-disc craze.[Wikipedia]Wikipedia1947 flying disc craze1947 flying disc craze

Finally, later historical reviews consistently describe the Ryman image as a balloon rather than an unresolved mystery. Although the original photograph retains historical importance, subsequent analysis has tended to weaken, rather than strengthen, claims that it depicts an extraordinary craft.[historylink.org]historylink.orgJuly 4, 1947. - HistoryLink.orgFebruary 8, 1999…Published: July 4, 1947

Why the photograph still matters in Washington’s UFO history

The Ryman photograph remains significant even if the balloon explanation is correct.

Its importance lies in what it reveals about the first weeks of the 1947 Washington flap. The public had rapidly shifted from reading about Kenneth Arnold’s visual observation to expecting physical evidence. Newspapers eagerly published photographs because they appeared more objective than witness testimony, even when the images themselves were ambiguous.

The case also demonstrates a recurring problem in UFO investigations. Photographs often seem persuasive because they freeze an event into a tangible object that readers can inspect. Yet a photograph stripped of context may provide less useful information than a detailed observation by a trained witness. Ryman’s image became famous largely because it existed, not because it clearly showed an extraordinary vehicle.

For historians of Washington’s UFO story, the photograph therefore serves as an early lesson in evidential caution. It illustrates how media attention, public expectation and limited photographic information combined during the state’s formative flying-saucer wave. Within the broader pattern of the 1947 Washington flap, it stands as an example of evidence that appeared compelling at the time but has generally become less persuasive under later scrutiny.[historylink.org]historylink.orgJuly 4, 1947. - HistoryLink.orgFebruary 8, 1999…Published: July 4, 1947
