Introduction
The short answer is that there is no medical consensus that ionising radiation caused the Cash–Landrum injuries. Betty Cash, Vickie Landrum and Colby Landrum all became ill after their reported close encounter with a luminous object in rural Texas on 29 December 1980, and Betty Cash’s condition was serious enough to require repeated hospital treatment. Their symptoms—including nausea, vomiting, skin blistering and later hair loss—have often been described as resembling radiation sickness. These records demonstrate that Betty Cash was genuinely unwell. What they do not demonstrate is the source of her illness. At first glance, several reported symptoms appear compatible with acute radiation injury. None of those lines of evidence definitively established that the Cash–Landrum witnesses had received a large dose of ionising radiation.
Another complication is the reported severity of the symptoms. The level of radiation required to produce extensive burns, prolonged illness and significant hair loss would ordinarily be expected to leave additional measurable biological evidence and could potentially be life-threatening, depending on the dose and type of exposure. Why some investigators argued for radiation

These observations helped establish the reputation of the case within UFO literature. Unlike many reported encounters, the Cash–Landrum incident involved documented medical treatment rather than only subjective accounts of fear or unusual lights.
Importantly, though, even doctors who regarded radiation as a plausible explanation could not identify the radiation source itself. The medical resemblance remained an inference rather than a confirmed diagnosis.
Why many medical and sceptical reviews remain unconvinced

Thermal, chemical and other possible causes
If radiation has not been proven, what else might explain the reported injuries?
Several possibilities have been proposed, although none has been demonstrated conclusively.
Extreme thermal exposure. The witnesses consistently described intense heat. High temperatures alone could account for skin pain, dehydration and some eye irritation. However, ordinary heat exposure does not easily explain every reported symptom or the prolonged course of Betty Cash’s illness.
Chemical exposure. Some investigators have suggested that combustion products, industrial chemicals or unidentified airborne contaminants might theoretically produce skin irritation and gastrointestinal illness. No chemical agent was ever identified.
Combined heat and environmental stress. A combination of intense radiant heat, smoke or combustion gases, dehydration and psychological stress has also been suggested. Again, there is no direct evidence supporting this explanation over the others.
The absence of physical measurements from the scene means that none of these mechanisms can be tested retrospectively with confidence.
What the radiation claim means today
More than four decades later, the strongest evidence is surprisingly narrow.
The evidence does support the conclusion that Betty Cash suffered a serious illness after the reported encounter and that the Landrums also experienced symptoms requiring medical attention. The medical treatment is not simply folklore.
The evidence does not support the stronger claim that ionising radiation has been medically proven as the cause. Neither the hospital records nor later investigations established radiation exposure to the standard expected in radiation medicine. Likewise, the medical evidence does not identify a verified alternative mechanism.
For that reason, the radiation claim remains best understood as a plausible but unproven hypothesis. It continues to be discussed because the witnesses’ illnesses were real and unusually severe, yet the available medical evidence falls short of demonstrating that ionising radiation—or any other specific physical agent—was responsible. Within the wider Texas history of UFO reports, that unresolved gap is one of the main reasons the Cash–Landrum incident continues to attract both serious investigation and sustained scepticism.
