Did the Radar Track Lead to the Hills?

Introduction
The idea that the North Concord radar contact in Vermont and Betty and Barney Hill’s famous encounter in New Hampshire were parts of the same event has become one of the most frequently repeated claims associated with the case. The chronology, however, is much less straightforward than many later retellings suggest. The military radar contact occurred in late afternoon on 19 September 1961, while the Hills’ reported close visual encounter began several hours later during their overnight drive in New Hampshire. Although both events took place on the same date, the available evidence does not establish that the radar tracked the same object later seen by the Hills. The timeline from North Concord to Lincoln
The strongest evidence in this comparison is the documented sequence of events.
Project Blue Book records show that North Concord Air Force Station detected an unidentified radar return beginning at 2122 UTC on 19 September 1961, equivalent to 5:22 pm Eastern Standard Time. The contact lasted about 18 minutes and was tracked at a reported altitude of roughly 62,000 feet before disappearing from radar. Betty and Barney Hill, meanwhile, were returning from a holiday in Canada. Their widely reported sighting began much later, close to midnight, as they travelled south through New Hampshire. According to their account, they first noticed an unusual light while driving and later believed they experienced a period of missing time before eventually continuing home. That gap is important because no military record shows continuous tracking between Vermont and the location of the Hills’ sighting. Instead, there are two separate reports separated by both time and geography.
A later radar incident at Pease Air Force Base in New Hampshire occurred at approximately 2:14 am on 20 September, after the Hills’ reported encounter. What the bearing and route do not prove
The North Concord radar report contains enough technical detail to establish that military operators observed a genuine radar target. It does not, however, provide a flight path linking that target to the Hills.
Several limitations prevent such a conclusion.
- The recorded bearing describes where the radar target appeared relative to the station, not a mapped route across northern New England.
- The reported movement was described as slow and somewhat erratic, including shifts towards the north-west and south, rather than a sustained course towards the Hills’ eventual location.
- The target disappeared from radar after approximately 18 minutes, leaving several hours during which no documented tracking exists.

Altitude also complicates the comparison. The North Concord target was estimated at about 62,000 feet. By contrast, the Hills described an object that eventually appeared much closer and capable of detailed visual observation. Without continuous observations, there is no evidence showing that a single object descended tens of thousands of feet and later appeared over the White Mountains.
In practical terms, the available records leave an evidential gap rather than a continuous track.
How later retellings strengthened the connection
The association between the radar contact and the Hill case grew stronger over time than the original documentation justified.
During the 1970s, an Air Command and Staff College research report discussing whether Project Blue Book should have been reopened highlighted the coincidence that a military radar contact occurred less than seven hours before the Hills’ sighting and that another radar incident occurred after it. Later UFO literature often compressed this sequence into a simpler narrative, implying that military radar followed the Hills’ object before, during or after their encounter. In many summaries, the distinction between three separate observations—the Vermont radar return, the Hills’ visual sighting and the later Pease radar contact—became blurred.
As the story was retold, the coincidence of date gradually came to overshadow the uncertainties of chronology. Readers unfamiliar with the original Blue Book documents could easily gain the impression that one uninterrupted military tracking operation existed when no surviving record demonstrates this.
Why most researchers regard the radar link as weak
The North Concord case remains historically interesting because it represents an authentic Cold War radar report recorded by military personnel on the same day as one of the most famous UFO cases in American history.
That coincidence alone does not establish causation.
Researchers who argue for a connection rely primarily on timing rather than continuous observational evidence. Those taking a more sceptical view point to three unresolved problems:
- the roughly five-hour interval between the Vermont radar contact and the Hills’ reported encounter;
- the absence of documented tracking between the two locations; and

For that reason, the North Concord radar report is best understood as contextual evidence rather than corroboration. It demonstrates that military radar operators detected an unidentified target somewhere in the region on the same date, but it does not demonstrate that the Hills later encountered that same object.
