Within the debate over the 1948 Chiles–Whitted encounter near Montgomery, Alabama, the key sceptical question is not whether bright meteors exist, but whether a meteor could genuinely appear to be a nearby craft on a collision course. Astronomers who supported the meteor explanation argued that it could. Under night-time conditions, a distant fireball can be surprisingly difficult to judge correctly. A meteor’s path is viewed in projection against the sky. What an observer sees is not the object’s true three-dimensional trajectory but its apparent motion from a particular viewing angle. A meteor descending at a shallow angle toward the horizon can appear to move almost horizontally across a witness’s field of view. Why the Apparent Climb May Be Perspective
The reported climb after the object passed the aircraft is often treated as the strongest argument against a meteor. Yet this feature can also be explained through geometry.
When a bright meteor moves past an observer and away toward the horizon, its apparent direction can change dramatically. A trajectory that is actually descending through the atmosphere may appear to curve upward because the observer’s viewing angle is changing rapidly. The effect is similar to how a distant aircraft can appear to rise even while losing altitude when viewed from certain positions.
Perspective effects are especially powerful when an object is moving at high speed across the observer’s line of sight. As the meteor recedes, the visible glowing trail can remain illuminated briefly, creating the impression that the object itself has suddenly turned upward.
