Introduction

Project Twinkle was created to solve a straightforward problem: witnesses were reporting bright green fireballs near sensitive military installations in the American Southwest, but eyewitness testimony alone could not determine what the objects were. The Air Force therefore planned a network of camera stations that would photograph the same object from different locations and use triangulation to calculate its altitude, speed and trajectory. In principle, this was a sound scientific approach. In practice, the system never worked as intended. By the time Project Twinkle ended in 1951, it had produced almost no decisive measurements and had failed to capture the evidence needed to confirm or eliminate competing explanations. How the camera and triangulation system was meant to work

The central idea behind Project Twinkle was not to collect more witness reports but to replace subjective observations with measurable data. Following scientific discussions in 1949, investigators concluded that simultaneous observations from multiple stations were essential. The proposed system called for multiple observation posts equipped with specialised cameras and tracking instruments. Each station would record the exact time, azimuth and elevation of a sighting. If two stations photographed the same fireball at the same moment, investigators could calculate:

  • Altitude above the ground.
  • Speed and direction of travel.
  • Approximate size and brightness.
  • Whether the object behaved like a meteor or something else.

This was a proven astronomical technique. Modern meteor networks use essentially the same principle, relying on overlapping camera coverage to reconstruct trajectories accurately. Why a single camera was not enough

A recurring misunderstanding is that any photograph would have settled the mystery. In reality, a photograph from one location mainly shows appearance, not distance.

A bright meteor, a distant aircraft light, an atmospheric phenomenon and an unknown object can all appear similar in a single image. Investigators needed geometry rather than imagery alone.
