Introduction
The most famous early UFO case from northern Maine was not ultimately a mystery in the sky at all. On the night of 10 October 1952, military weather observers at Presque Isle Air Force Base and the nearby Limestone installation believed they were measuring a strange bright object. When their observations were combined, the calculations appeared to place an enormous object high above the Earth. For a time, the case looked important enough to attract the attention of Air Force investigators during one of the busiest years in American UFO history.
The twist was that the object was almost certainly Jupiter. A simple but crucial error in the way one observing station aligned its instrument with true north distorted the geometry of the sighting.
